I have some holiday avi files which were recorded on a friend's camcorder. He used an MS app to transfer them to the PC. I find that on my linux system I'm not able to view them. Running the file command on one of them I get:
"uvs040331-002-33.AVI: RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 720 x 576, 25.00 fps"
Does anyone know of a program that I can use to view (convert) them? I normally use xine but it complains about not having the codec. I don't remember now but I think that I get the same result from mplayer.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks Eddie

Did you install your xine/mplayer from Packman? It should have come with the needed codecs then. I use mplayer for viewing of just about any media file, and haven't encountered any problems sofar. mencoder could use used to convert them, but then you'd still need to be able to play them with mplayer in the first place.

I've just installed the packman version. It complains as follows: "There is no demuxer plugin available to handle . . . Usually this means that the file format was not recognized"
Any thoughts on how to get it to play?
Thanks

How big is the file? I _could_ have a look at it if you want me to, to see if it plays here, and if so: convert it, or let you know what you need...

Did you also install the win32codec package from packman?
You need this as well to play avi files. (Although there are still the odd codecs that don't work)
I've noticed that in SUSE 9.1 Professional, most of the AVI files I have won't play, but in 8.2 Professinoal they work without a problem. I custom install all of mt distros, and I made sure I have the same movie players installed, but on 9.1 they don't work, and 8.2 they do, so it's a trade off. Heh, 9.1 allows me to play 3D games, but 8.2 won't find my video card the same, and even after installing the Nvidia driver on my laptop it won't work in 8.2 but it WILL in 9.1. LOL, trade off, games or movies.

Interesting: I've installed the packages from PackMan on SuSE 9.1 professional, and I have no such problem. I haven't encountered a non-corrupted file yet that wouldn't play.

Packman ?? I don't believe I've ever used that. On SUSE 8.2 I just installed the AVIplay program and it works. I do the same on 9.1 and it doesn't. My installs are totally custom with a bunch of applications I use included, and all dependencies. I'll read up on Packman later, I have to go to work right now.

Just google for mplayer packman, and you should find the page right at the top. :) PackMan's really great for getting those up and ready SuSE packages installed.
