Hi, I'm a complete newbie when it comes to sound in linux. I have Suse 7.1 running and for a long time the sound was fine (It had been correctly configured during installation. But one day I decided to install a divX player which need updated SDL libraries. I promptly downloaded and type rpm -i SDL....rpm (i.e. newbie pressed the wrong button ;) Big mistake..I should have updated it.. (now I know ;) Ever since then, the sound on my system has completely dissapeared and I'm at a complete loss. I've looked at the sound howto but from what it says I'm missing the the sound module in the kernel, but if it had been working prior to my 'mistake' the the sound module should be there. This is the boot message... Starting sound driver: snd-card-ens1371 done Starting sound driver: off done Starting sound driver: off done but cat /dev/sndstat (As per the howto) returns.... cat: /dev/sndstat: No such device I really have no clue what to do and I don't want to re-install Suse because I have lot's of things setup that might be lost. I would REALLY appreciate it if someone could suggest what I might do to find the cause of my problem and how I might go about fixing it. The howto doesn't seem to cover this. I've had a similar problem with SuSE and Alsa. I uninstalled alsa, dl'ed the latest tar.gz files and installed using checkinstall. Now if I re-compile the kernal all I do is install the RPMs that checkinstall made me. You may wish to try that if the guru's on this list don't come up with a better idea! HTH Terence
BigT: In Suse_7.3, same thing happened to me. Only solution I found was to re-install. Most of the sound appeared, but midi never has worked since. ray hartman ******************** On Friday 15 February 2002 10:07, Terence McCarthy wrote:
