Re: [suse-multimedia-e] dvd::rip : what codecs to make a CD viewable on Windows too?
Todd Guse:
You might want to try the DivX or XviD codec's/players. Both have good success reading .avi files.
Luis Rodriguez Gil:
Hello To stay close to linux stuff, I think you should download ffdshow, you can find it at http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow (I think the project's home page is http://ffdshow.sourceforge.net) it provides support for almost every codec, you'll read about that in the webpage. Else, you can download mplayer for windows at http://www.mplayerhq.hu/ or better, Mplayer Control (a frontend for mplayer) at sourceforge.net, too.
I hope you find a solution. Good Luck.
Chadley Wilson:
Go to http://www.free-codecs.com and download and install the latest XP-codec pack there..
Thank you for your hints. Regrettably it is not the solution I am looking for. I will give my CD to customers and I can't ask them to go and download anything. They just want to put a CD in their drive (or even DVD-drive on their TV) and look at it. So I have to provide such a CD that is just running in "all" computers using standard programs that just are there by default. Actually I don't care, if at the end it's an avi or an mpg or whatever (I joust thought avi would be the right one, it sounded so windowish to me...). I am almost sure, if I use the right settings in dvd::rip then this should be possible. But what are the right settings/codecs? Can anybody help...? Daniel b.t.w.: as many people still have old systems (Win 98, ME etc.) I can't use something that is just running on XP. DivX, for example, is not supportet for Win98 anymore. -- Daniel Bauer photographer Basel Switzerland professional photography: http://www.daniel-bauer.com special interest site: http://www.bauer-nudes.com

I think that if you want a DVD drive to work, than either videocd or dvd format would work best. I use a combination of tovid, makexml, and dvdauthor for that purpose, and haven't had any problems yet. It will convert your file to the correct mpeg standard, create your DVD menu (can be very simple), and create the DVD structure. From there K3B should have no problem burning your DVD for you. Thanks Pieter, The thing is, I want to make a CD (not a DVD) with the video. (Actually I don't have a dvd-burner, only cd and [because dvd's are not important to me] I'll wait with buying a new device until it's more clear what will be the new dvd-standard and prices come down...) So I need a way to bring that video into a format that can be burned on CD and read on almost every PC (and, but only if possible, on home-dvd-drives on TV). I know, there are "video-CD's" but I don't know how to make it and what codecs I have to use. Anyway, I don't care what format as long as people can easily look at it... Any hints? No problem: tovid can make video CDs just as easily as CDs. Just have a look at http://tovid.berlios.de/en/index.html If I remember correctly, I downloaded all the needed RPMs from Packman, and they worked right out of the box for me. Since I don't use Windows myself I don't know how the native VCD support is under Windows. Anyone care to comment on that? Regards, Pieter Hulshoff

Thanks Peter, I have tried to install tovid. I haven't found it on packman, but there was a rpm for my openSuse 10.0 at rpm.pbone.net which I installed. I couldn't find the gui version (can't locate tovidgui.py on my system???), so I tried the command line version. All I got then was a .mpg-file, slightly smaller than the avi, but Windows still can't play it. I still think Iit's all a question of using the right codecs, but which ones are the right ones? I recently received a CD with some .mov files. They play on my Linux system as well as on Windows and a Mac, too. How did they make those files? I want to be able for that, too - and I am sure there's a way on Linux to achieve that. Any ideas? Thanks for any help... Did you burn that file as a video CD in K3B or did you burn it as a file? I am disappointed that it wouldn't be able to play a simple MPEG file, but VCD is a different format, which if I recall correctly K3B should be able to generate based on the correct MPEG file.

Well, you could try mencoder, and convert the file to WMV7 format (lavcopts, vcodec=wmv1). It would be pretty sad if Windows would not be able to play that though the stand alone DVD player will most likely not accept it. Regards, Pieter Hulshoff

Aha... I burned it to CD as a file, I could play the mpg on Linux but not on W. After reading your hint, I told K3B to make a Video-CD from this mpg - and hey: it works :-)) On Windows 98 I had to use a "powerDVD"-Demo-Version to look at the video-CD, but anyway: now I have a CD that can be viewed even on Windows. Wow. (I really wonder about W.: how can it be impossible to show a mpeg-file and then, the same file but as video-cd can be played... Well, seems to be the Mocrosoft way to drive people crazy. But that's another story :-) Thanks a lot!
