From the command line, enter "killall artsd" and you should be able to play with XMMS etc. Also, in the KDE control centre under the section Sound,

The modules are not your problem. KDE starts a sound server that locks out other players like XMMS from accessing the sound device, so you need to kill this sound server. there is a sub section Sound Server. In there at the top there is a checkbox to start the sound server. Uncheck this box to stop the sound server being started up again when KDE starts up again. XMMS hangs when I try to start it. Gqmpg hangs. mp3blaster on a terminal doesn't play, but at least provides a message "Failed to open sound device".
