MP3 Plugin for XMMS and Sound Problem in Suse 10.
Hi Everyone, I just installed SUSE Linux 10.0 on my system. But I am not able to configure sound (I configured through YAST), although when I click on test button I am able to hear the sound but when I play an audio cd I can't hear anything. The audio cd is an auto play and it shows me the time and menu of tracks in the audio cd on the media player (xmms and the default audio player). Please help me in correcting the issue. Besides that I am also not able to play mp3 in SUSE. It seems that the players require a plugin to play the mp3 files. Where can I find the mp3 plugin for SUSE Specific?? Any help, greatly appreciated. Following is the configuration of my machine:- 1) Pentium III 500 MHz 2) 4 MB Video RAM 2) 256 MB Ram 3) 20 GB HDD Thank you. -- Vinu Pillai.

Good question. CD's play fine using Kaffeine, though.
You need to check your speaker settings. There is a little speaker button on the top of the window if you are using gnome. Check to make sure that you have adequate volume. also check the application you have to make sure that the volume is set properly. I know this is a bit fundamental, but I had the same problem until I started fulling with the different volume. Matthew Dunaway wrote:

Make sure you have an audio cable connected from your CD/DVD-ROM to your sound card.

What desktop environment do you use? If you're using KDE, use amaroK with RealPlayer plugin to play mp3 files.

This info is useless. Can you give more details? What desktop environment are you using? What soundcard do you have? How's your soundcard connect to the computer? PCI or ISA? Cheers, -- Liviu Damian Phone: +40741226993 Blog: http://liviudm.blogspot.com Blog: http://my.opera.com/liviudm/blog/
Thanks for the help.. I am using KDE desktop and also I have installed GNOME (but still haven't logged in yet)... The sound card is ---> Intel 82801AA AC'97 and it's on mother board itself, not sure through what mode?? Please let me know the difference between PCI and ISA... As far as cable is concerned I think I removed it sometimes back, but does it make a difference becuase in windows XP it works fine... Please reply. Thanks again for your support. Those are the "slots" on your motherboard in which you connect your add-on cards. It's like AGP. Since you have your sound card on-board you don't have to worry about this.

Windows XP does not require that cable connected. Don't ask me why. Connect that cable again and audio CDs will work.

Your welcome,
Windows XP may be taking the audio track from the cd as data so it wouldn't need the audio output of the cd drive. On some cd drives you can get to the audio in three ways. The cd drive processes the data on the cd and presents the audio in two forms analog and digital (both requiring a cable to an audio input on the sound card). The other method uses your computer to process the data on the cd into audio. This just uses the sound card as a D/A output device(no cable from the cd drive to the sound card needed).

After upgrading to Suse 10 my onboard soundcard did not work either. But I only had to configure it with Yast, and since then it works fine. You can find it under Hardware/Sound I presume.

Basically there are two ways to hear sound from your cd-rom: preferably via the extra cable to the sound card, or via de pc-bus. Here is what I read in the perfect help system of KsCD: " There are two ways that personal computers can play a CD. The first method (which KsCD refers to as direct digital playback), is performed by reading the digital data from the CD using Digital Audio Extraction (DAE). This data is sent to your machines CPU which converts the digital data to sound. This method requires a CD drive that is capable of DAE (most new drives are) and it requires some CPU processing time to generate the sounds you hear. The second method uses the internal circuitry available on many CD drives to read the data and generate the sounds you will hear without using your computers CPU. This data is transmitted by a dedicated cable directly to the sound card in your computer. This method requires less CPU proccessing time, but it does require that the dedicated cable be connected inside your computer. Not all computers have this connection. KsCD defaults to the second method of playback. The next step in troubleshooting your CD problems is to enable direct digital playback. To do this begin by clicking on the button labeled Stop on the KsCD window. This will stop any attempt to play the CD for now. Now click on the button labeled Extras. This will open a small menu. Select Configure KsCD.... This will open a new dialog box. Click the icon labeled CD Player on the left side of the dialog box. Place a mark in the checkbox labeled Use direct digital playback. Click OK. Now click Play in the KsCD window and see if the CD begins to play correctly. " So give this a try. And try the help yourself.

Correct, it is absent, also in my Dutch translated version. So the help system is not so perfect... But I have two entries in KDE's menu for playing cd's. The second one runs gnome-cd, and that one can play cd's-without-cable. greetz Marc -- XS2Mail: Check your mail anywhere http://www.xs2mail.com/

Make sure that your CD is not playing before you try and configure this. I know that on my system the box is greyed out and hard to see if the CD is playing. I am using KsCD 1.6 on Suse 9.2 with KDE 3.5.0 level a. I hope this helps you. Eric

Even with no CD in the drive, I don't see the checkbox. I'm using kscd 1.6, KDE 3.4.2 level b, Suse 10.0. I have greyed out options for Select audio backend and device, but no checkbox like is shown in the manual. -- Cheers, TonyB
Hallo friends, I've been trying to get the jackd sound server to work under SuSE 10.0: - kill some processes: killall -9 artsd killall -9 jackd - Start the sound server: jackd -vv -d alsa -d hw:0 & - Send a sine-wave to test it ecasound -f:32,1,44100 -i null -o jack_alsa -b:1024 -el:sine_fcac,440,1 -> Silence - Start hydrogen, select a demo, play it -> Silence - Start zynaddsubfx & -> Silence My Tecra S3 can play everything through alsa and oss. So the sound system seems to work in principle. Has anyone gotten jackd to play under SuSE 10.0 ? Please help, Cheers, Wolfgang

First about xmms, try packman. I don't use xmms so I don't know how it was packaged by SuSE. It is just possible that the versions of Kscd that have the direct digital play back option had it added for their distribution. You can look at the source code for these programs and perhaps that will shed some light on what is or isn't included, omitted, or wrong with what you have. Over the years I have discovered that sometimes the configuration files do not always get updated when doing an upgrade. If a new option became available but the configuration file didn't get updated you might not see options appear. Cheers, David Pillai, Vinu wrote:

That plugin is called xmms-mpg123-1.2.7-21.i386.rpm, after installing it you will be able to play mp3s everywhere.
