Try killall -9 artsd and the realplayer will go on :)
A rather crude way of handling the problem
I agree that killall -9 is crude... Hopefully something more elegant will appear. We live in an inelegant world sometimes though. ;-)
so when play xxx.wav does not emit sound (it will eventually after no artsd activity for 60 seconds, so not hang) start it with artsdsp play xxx.wav
That's pretty hard to do when the file at hand is a streaming real media file, rather than a wav.
problem with realplayer has mysteriously vanished. :-)
Most probably no KDE sound activity for 60 seconds
I don't think this was the fix, though I'll try your 60 seconds of silence approach. Another strange symptom: After finishing a stream Real Player always emits a beep, occasionally with a bit of a sound generated by another program added. -- The number of arguments is unimportant unless some of them are correct. -- Ralph Hartley
I had the same problem this works for me: in KDE go to: Control Center - Sound - Soundserver there, in the General Tab unclick Start aRts soundserver on KDE starup Always there will be the possibility of enable it again.
