Logitech QuickCam USB - any success stories?
Greetings, I'm running SuSE 7.3 and have found very spotty info on the web about getting a Logitech QuickCam (USB) to run. One avenue looked promising but warned about possible hardware damage, so I declined. Does anyone know of a good resource or have a word or two of good advice? Thanks, Marcel ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ __ _____ | |_ _______ __ | Everything in moderation, \ \ / / _ \| \ \ / / _ \ \/ / | ....including moderation. \ V / (_) | |\ V / (_) > < | \_/ \___/|_| \_/ \___/_/\_\ | mailto:volvox@telusplanet.net ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

You need to look carefully at the exact model number of the quickcam you want to buy, and compare it with the compatible models listed in the quickcam driver documentation. I purchased a new one marked "quickcam express" and found that it was recognized on the Linux USB bus, but the driver did not support that model. Other products, also called "Quickcam Express" are compatible. You need to verify the model number. The best way may be to look in your kernel source (/usr/src/linux/Documentation) and read the documentation for the kernel driver. That says which models are supported. I eventually returned the quickcam to the store and bought a Kensington webcam, less expensive and works perfectly. helmut@familie-willems.de wrote:

Thanks everyone so far, Though as my luck would have it, I have a "QuickCam Express" (I received it for free from my ADSL provider for sighing up with them), and I'm not in a position to go and get a new one :( Marcel -----Original Message----- From: John C. Has anyone had any luck getting midi to work on an SB Live 5.1 sound card? I'm interested in using the cards midi in order to run the TK-707 drum machine software, but not sure where to start. I have TK up and running but there is no sound. Any suggestions or ideas? Roy

Go into the YaST2 sound card configuration. In the advanced setup there should be an option to enable the MIDI (it says MPU-401, IIRC) port. - -- James Oakley jfunk@funktronics.ca -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.6 (GNU/Linux) Comment: For info see http://www.gnupg.org iD8DBQE8QT+wKtn0F7+/lLMRAu+dAJ0ZnPf5sGgHFjeAO23NCw2A3VifdgCeKHwD V+yLSi4jysgjF3kNUPGL7yQ= =l6Jk -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

You need to make sure you have sound fonts loaded. If you go through the setup in YaST2, it asks you at one point whether you want to install them from the SoundBlaster CD. I don't remember how much it does for you automatically, but I have this in /etc/modules.conf to load them at boot time: alias sound emu10k1 post-install snd-card-emu10k1 /usr/bin/sfxload /usr/local/sblive/8MBGMSFX.SF2 -- ======================================================= Glenn Holmer (gholmer@ameritech.net) ------------------------------------------------------- Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn. Hi,
Has anyone had any luck getting midi to work on an SB Live 5.1 sound card? I'm interested in using the cards midi in order to run the TK-707 drum machine software, but not sure where to start. I have TK up and running but there is no sound. Any suggestions or ideas? If you own a SuSE 7.2 or 7.3 you should perhaps have a look at the sound chapter in the application manual. There is a section on loading soundfonts for SB Live and another section on TK-707. Also you will find a lot of other information on MIDI and ALSA in this chapter.
