Greetings all, Could someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong or show me what to do to get sound to work using the ALSA driver? I play CD or MP3 via XMMS and no output. Searched for "sound' on sus.com and found article titled "Installing a soundsystems from scratch" and followed this with no problems. Sound on my workstation works OK with W2k and RHL7.3 but I have decided on SuSE 7.3pro due to more multi-media options. Harware detection of sound card (Intel 820) during install was OK. Here is last part of modules.conf: -- options snd-card-intel8x0 snd_index=0 alias char-major-14 off # Alsa sound support. # Warning: please don't modify comments over aliases 'snd-card-#' alias char-major-116 snd options snd snd_cards_limit=1 snd_major=116 # W60f.Kwq_E7BMZmF:82820 820 (Camino 2) Chipset AC'97 Audio Controller alias snd-card-0 snd-card-intel8x0 # YaST2: sound system dependent part # alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0 alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-11 snd-mixer-oss alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss -- I can delete/add the card in YaST2 and no errros. When configure sound in KDE Config, changing from "Auto Detect" to ALSA and stop/start the sound daemon I get a thump in the speakers. All help and comments would be greatly appreciated. Your modules.conf looks OK. Is there perhaps a problem with the mixer settings ? Under certain circumstances, ALSA mutes the output as default. You can check this with gamix or alsamixer. These programs are documented in the application manual. Another thing: After startup of KDE, artsd takes control over the PCM output channel of your soundcard. If no application uses artsd for more than 60 sec. (this is the current timeout), artsd will give the PCM output free. So, after each start of KDE, any sound application which doesn't use artsd but tries to access the PCM out channel directly, will block for about 60 sec. This is not true e.g. for Soundblaster Live, since the PCM devices of this card can be opened and used simultaneously by multiple applications. You can disable artsd in the KDE control center.
