perhaps, an example of what you do wish to take picture would be more helpful? There is a screenshot app under the Kmenu ( dunno about gnome) that is called ksnapshot that works well for showing almost anything on the desktop... Kmenu ->utilities-> ksnapshot hope this helps, if not more info from you is required :) -- j -- nemo me impune lacessit it's just an afterthought; okay ? : The most expensive component always breaks first.

xawtv-remote
-- Until later, Geoffrey Registered Linux User #108567 Building secure systems in spite of Microsoft yes, but this requires as well a running xawtv :(

True, but you can invoke the snap from a script, which is what I was assuming is what he wants to do.

sorry, this is my first time i'm writing to a mailing list. i have a webcam and i want to be able to take a snapshot from the cam (/dev/video0) and save it to a file. so i need either a program which does both or just get's me the snapshot from the cam. xawtv-remote allows to snapshot from a running xawtv process, but i want it without any process before. the program should open the device, take the snapshot and cloe the device. thats it. hope this informations was useful for you. thanks for your help David

My apologies for my previous brain dead suggestion... Streamer used to come with xawtv, just noted it now comes with v4l-tools on SuSE 9.0 pro. With streamer you can pull multiple images, streams or a single image from a v4l device, check it out. Something like: streamer -t 1 -o foo.jpeg -- Until later, Geoffrey Registered Linux User #108567 Building secure systems in spite of Microsoft
