Re: [suse-multimedia-e] distorted sound output
my last post for the day, sorry. In the mean time you might want to seriously consider upgrading from ALSA v0.5.11 to alsa .9xxx see http://alsa-project.org/ What distro are you running? On Tuesday 21 May 2002 15:55, you wrote:

I take it the .mp3s sound ok when played on the windoze side? If so...
What is your card?
Sound Driver: 3.8.2-980706 (ALSA v0.5.11 emulation code) Kernel: Linux wahoo 2.4.10-4GB #1 Fri Sept 28 17:20:21 GMT 2001 i686 Config options: 0 Installed drivers: Type 10: ALSA emulation Card config: Ensoniq AudioPCI ES1731 at 0xd000, irq 5 Audio devices 0: ES1371 DAC2/ADC (DUPLEX) Synth devices: NOT ENABLED INCONFIG Midi devices: 0: ES1371 Timers: 7: system timer Mixers: 0: Cirrus Logic CS4297A rev A
What version alsa?
AlsaPlayer 0.99.36
Also type: dmesg | grep ALSA so we can see if it's loading with no errors.
must load w/o error. There is no output for: dmesg ! grep ALSA or for XMMS or noatun
(noatun will start, shows controls and progress, but no sound).
I wish to know which apps your using to listen to these mp3s.
alsaplayer, freeamp, xmms. Noatun doesn't play (see previous).
tks,

OK, Let's see, What does the command: rpm -q alsa give us? and you might want to perform a: cat /etc/modules.conf Which will list all the modules on your system. We're only interested in the alsa modules but it will be handy to know. for instance on my machine.... cat /etc/modules.conf --snip-- options snd-emu10k1 snd_enable=1 snd_index=0 options snd-rme9652 snd_enable=1 snd_index=1 snd_precise_ptr=0 options snd snd_cards_limit=2 snd_major=116 # WL76.fvGZQvH6qG7:CT4760 SBLive! alias snd-card-0 snd-emu10k1 # gZD2.ZEKAtBTA_DA:Xilinx, Inc. alias snd-card-1 snd-rme9652 # YaST2: sound system dependent part # alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0 alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-11 snd-mixer-oss alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss alias sound-slot-1 snd-card-1 alias sound-service-1-0 snd-mixer-oss alias sound-service-1-1 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-1-3 snd-pcm-oss alias sound-service-1-8 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-1-11 snd-mixer-oss alias sound-service-1-12 snd-pcm-oss --snip-- -- Gary Counsellor http://www.musician2000.com sineigs.all.attitudes@eskimo.com Please remove .all.attitudes before replying
The best thing to do to check for gain staging errors is: 1. Lower all values on mixer to null/0/nada 2. start playing mp3 3. take master volume to @ 80% 4 start raising each slider individually if it has no effect turn it down if it adds noise turn it down if it makes music decide where you want it. PCM levels can make your computer sound great! full, more bottom end etc. and will cause needless distortion if set too high. (in some cases) Repeat these these steps for mp3/wav, midi timiditity/kmidi and midi kmid. CD etc. When all the setting are as you want them. Save the settings and alsa will remember them on every start. -- Gary Counsellor http://www.musician2000.com sineigs.all.attitudes@eskimo.com Please remove .all.attitudes before replying

yes

ok, have distortion now. No need to go further. NOTE: PCM @ 20%, no sound volume w/o this setting.
4 start raising each slider individually if it has no effect turn it down if it adds noise turn it down if it makes music decide where you want it.

sorry to be so long (went fishing) 1. If distortion is present at main vol = 80 % reduce it-- does distortion disappear at say 60% or 40%? If distortion does not disappear--reduce pcm to 10% and see what happens you may have to raise main volume up to hear anything but there should be less distortion. If distortion does disappear, you may lower pcm to say 10% which will give you more room to play with volume min to max without distortion one other note: may sets of speakers have external hardware amps (duh!) and external hardware volume controls. Make sure these are turned at max @ 30% others wise, these alone will overdrive or over-power speakers and cause distortion. did you update to alsa 9.xx http://alsa-project.org ?
