Try blender-2.56 it's video editing is designed for creating animated movies but it's totally professional and has the most active development I have ever seen for a single package.
well... I was never able to do anything with Blender, I have it, but can't even find a way to load a clip on it
I find VSE on the menu, and then?
thanks jdd
That's the problem, there's a movie file filter but the use of ffmpeg is removed (crippled) though you should be able to load ogg/theora video and vorbis sound which is the only video codec still there, it supports avi containers. Pity they don't include matroska. It's got support for all the common image formats. I'm not familiar with the controls either but if you have the time blender.org has tutorials and manuals. The documentation for blender 2.5x is unfortunately the lowest priority. http://www.blender.org/education-help/tutorials/getting-started/ has a couple of 2.5x tutorials.
