It is just possible that the versions of Kscd that have the direct digital play back option had it added for their distribution.
You can look at the source code for these programs and perhaps that will shed some light on what is or isn't included, omitted, or wrong with what you have.
Over the years I have discovered that sometimes the configuration files do not always get updated when doing an upgrade. If a new option became available but the configuration file didn't get updated you might not see options appear.
