Hi :) Is there any effort being put into openSUSE/SLE so that it can run on UMPCs? I'm asking this because the UMPCs seem to be the new fad: Intel's pushing hard on these types of devices, so are laptop vendors (Samsung, Fujitsu, Asus, ...) I bought a UMPC (ASUS R2Hv) some time ago and it wasn't easy to get it up and running with openSUSE 10.3. I've heard Ubuntu is developing a version for MID and UMPCs (Ubuntu Mobile and Embedded), Red Flag's got another distro/version, Moblin, ... It would be quite nice if openSUSE/SLE had some type of support for UMPCs/MIDs. And it wouldn't be so difficult. For starters, if openSUSE/SLE could support 800x480 out of the box, that would be very nice. I know device support is a bit complicated, but at least on the R2Hv all devices are supported, you just have to download the drivers (many of them precompiled and copy them over to a directory). This is unfortunately not so easy as it sounds. The device support you mentioned later is much easier, that should tell you something. Most applications today expect higher resolutions, and the 480 are a big problem for them. I see more hope that we will see devices with higher resolution that an adaption of the applications to the smaller resolution. Yes, for cell phones and smart phones this is done, but that's a little bit different, and only covers a selected part of applications. ciao, Stefan -- Stefan Behlert, SUSE LINUX - a Novell business, --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-mobile+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-mobile+help@opensuse.org

I agree with you: adapting applications is complicated. I was just posting an example. Future (very near future) models are going to be built with higher resolutions ... but not "standard" resolutions ie 1024x600. What I meant is that openSUSE/SLE could include these "weird" resolutions out of the box (Debian does it). More so since these new devices (UMPCs and MIDs) are around the corner. For example: Samsung Q1: 7" monitor 1024x600, HSPA, WiFi, Blutooth, ... Have in mind also that laptops are getting smaller each day, monitor/screen resolutions (desktop and laptop) are also changing. Mind you, I'm not saying openSUSE/SLE _should_ support these gadgets. I'm saying that it would be _interesting_ since other distros are already supporting (or about to support) them. Well, I expect that this will mostly depend on the panel producers. I still hope to see some day a 10" display with 1280x800 or similiar. You will need good eye-sight for those, of course :)

I thought at least 1024x600 is supported by sax2. But you have a point here.

Ah, there are a lot of people interested :) So many interesting things, so few time :( ciao, Stefan -- Stefan Behlert, SUSE LINUX - a Novell business, --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-mobile+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-mobile+help@opensuse.org

True :) In any case, what could really be useful is to get the external monitor/projector working ... Ahhh. If I could get that to work well ;) I'm saying this because, let's be honest, nobody really works with these gadgets. Generally, you plug them into an external monitor and keyboard and work. And that's something that's missing, external monitor/projector doesn't work well :(

I don't know, never tried that resolution 0:)

True. Don't get me wrong, I'm not expecting to see support for UMPCs/MIDs on openSUSE 11/SLE 11. I just thought that maybe I could give some ideas for future roadmaps. I'm not personally worried since I've been using Linux since 1995 and have no problems, but maybe for new users ... Since openSUSE is one of the easiest distros (most user-friendly), it would be nice to see it on the UMPCs/MIDs ;) If you (SUSE/Novell) ever decide to go that way, I can send you the info to get openSUSE up and running on the Asus R2Hv. Yes, the limitation of some drivers to only allow cloning, and then only work good with the same resolution as the LCD is not helpful :( [...]

Sure, and that is very welcome.

Ah, why not simply add it somewhere on the opensuse wiki? This way all interested ones could profit from it :) Stefan -- Stefan Behlert, SUSE LINUX - a Novell business, --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-mobile+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-mobile+help@opensuse.org
