Deadly white band on the top of the X screen compaq Armada E-500
Hi, Up to SuSE-7.3, XFree86 version 4 or 3 worked fine on Compaq Armada E-500 using ATI Mobility P/M. In fact, I cannot exactly remember whether it was version 4.2 or 4.1 or even 3.3.6. Now, I fresh-installed SuSE-8.1 from scratch. The sax2 produced the X screen. However, a deadly white band appeared almost at the top of the X screen as illustrated in the diagram below: _________________________________________________ | | | | |_______________________________________________| | deadly white | |_______________________________________________| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |_______________________________________________| The mouse cursor is pointing off-focused to south by the thickness of the deadly white band. This symptom does not go away, no matter what xf8config program I used beside sax2. By my mistake I did not save XF86Config. If I were using 3.3.6, the file would not work for Version 4.?, I know. Does anyone having this problem? Thanks. G. Hugh Song

Hi I have the same deadly white bar at the botom after I patched the kernel. The patch is for the FBDEV so I can use wide screen console on my VAIO C1VE (1024x480). To use this patch I had to apend VGA=0x301 at the lilo promt. Then the console was ok but X had the white bar. When i remove this VGA=*something* line i got the right X-config. So for your problem try to disable the FBDEV at the boot prompt of lilo Jan :-)
