Installing epson perfection 3170 scanner

Running Suse 9.3, the Yast scanner configuration lists Epson Perfection 3170 and the system log lists a full speed USB device found when the scanner is plugged into a USB port, but Yast does not activate the scanner, and /sbin/lsusb lists nothing. Yast help says that in this case the system cannot communicate with the scanner. What should I do to get the Epson Perfection 3170 activated? Is a driver module necessary?
