[opensuse-marketing] [Weekly News] Winds of change
Hello Mates, the Weekly News Editors Team has reviewed your Posts. Few Weeks ago we've made an Call for Contribution, with the Question, what we can make better. The first Thing was, that we could make our Weekly News more Interesting for People who are reading the Mailinglists and planetSUSE regularly. And another Guy said, that we have every Issue the same People. So i've added more Sources in my Ticker like Linux.com, CNET and other Project/feeds. The next Step was to find some Writers who can deliver regularly Status Reports from other Projects. So we have Lydia Pintscher (PR from Amarok Project) and we have published their Article in the "Projects Corner." An other Guy wished some articles "behind the horizon". That we realized in the issue 81 through adding Articles about Google Chrome (OS) and Microsofts Driver. Another Guy wished to have an Downloadlink for every Program in "New/Updated Software". That is realized in #81 too. Then we tried to give for every Program an short Introducting. The other Things who are wished, are WIP. We thinking about realizing. The more in articles means an higher workload, so we're trying to reduce the workflow. The Articles must translated to native Languages, and must be published. So Jan had the Idea, that we make the public release from the Weekly News in english at Saturday. From Saturday on the Translators have enough time to translate. And the Weekly News in the Native Language are published if its ready. Through our Subpage ISSUENR/Translations the Reader can see which Language are ready. I think it's good, articles on Weekly News would be not only about openSUSE specific issues, but also about other Linux/FLOSS related issues. :-) However...

What's you meaning?
I, as one of the translators, think it's not all that great to have too many articles, really. :-( Translations are for the people who are not so good at reading English. In other words, the original en newsletter is enough for the people who don't have any difficulty in reading English. Most of the status and the moves of openSUSE are open and transparent, for the persons who can easily understand English, at least. But people who are not good at English would rarely know what are going on around openSUSE project/community, if we won't translate and introduce the announcements and news. I think it's our - translators' - most important task, introducing such informations to our local users. You know, translations for some $LANG are often delayed recently. For the translation sub teams that don't have enough human power, it's very hard to translate the newsletter every week at present. For those teams, increasing articles would cause more difficulties. You may point out that there's a 'Light version' option for translators. But, IMHO, the 'Light version' is a kind of compromising from the attitude 'it's better than nothing' and not enough for the people who are not good at reading English, because they have to read original English articles when they are interested in the titles. IMHO, we - translators - need a flexibility of choice, which articles should be translated and which articles may be 'Light versions'. It would be graet if translators have enough time to translate all articles, but if they don't have enough time, they may translate important articles first and the rest may be 'Light versions(just translate the title)'. And, what are the important articles ? No opinion, no question, no insight, NO INTEREST ? :-( As you know, the issue 81 is published, but only 2 $LANGs translations are available ATM (03:00 Wed. However, if it results in forcing translators to bear the burden, I'd like to consider whether there are some good way to strike a balance between enriching original newletters and reduction of incidence for translators. Actually I don't have any objection for the addition, it makes weekly news more colorful and can attract many readers:-) In case of ID translation, I found it a bit difficult to manage the translator even that I PM all the translator and ask for help in local mailing list (I understand that it is voluntarily and I cannot push them). I put all the name in translator page, but usually I translated all by myself. The delay of ID translation is only because I'm a bit busy with my work. Last week and for the next 2 weeks ID translation will delay.
