[opensuse-marketing] Creating videos
There was discussion in the "common language" threadabout creating videos which would require new thread, so let me put previous discussion in this post: Helen: Video is a lovely idea, but do we have any contributors who are keen and capable with video? As far as I know our video tools on linux, as Rajko mentions, are not mature so we are probably not attracting keen video creators to openSUSE. It takes a lot of time and effort to make a good quality video so people either have to be very keen to do it, or we need to feel that it's the very best way to present that particular information. There is more to creating a good video than just hitting 'record'. And I mean in terms of user experience, not just technical issues. As a user, I hate long, slow videos that take too long. I can scan a page of text very quickly to pull out the information I need. A video I have to watch to the end, and if someone takes too long I get impatient and think about all the download megabytes they are chewing up! Technically, vision quality needs to be great and if it isn't available in a high enough resolution, I can have trouble seeing the screenshots even with my glasses. So not only does a video creator need a good understanding of openSUSE and the feature(s) they are demonstrating, but also a good understanding of how to present that information and explain it well in a straightforward, clear way, as well as having the technical ability to record and publish it correctly. Kim Leyendecker: Q:What want we do on the video? A: To show how you can connect with the internet, browsing with firefox and getting mails with KMail or Thunderbird Q. A Poweruser can watch videos about working as root on the shell or compiling the kernel. jdd: we have to write a script. I think so too. But jdd is right about writting a script. In the past you´ve maybe seen, that jdd and I "talk" on this topic very different. So we maybe need more then one thread, because it will all ends in confusion when we talk on the script, the ideas, the plattform for hosting or whatever in _one_ thread. thanks kdl -- Kim Leyendecker (kimleyendecker@hotmail.de) openSUSE Ambassador powered by openSUSE 11.3 KDE This mail was composed under Linux Have you tried SUSE Studio? Well... Let's use this thread for setting up some video infos. 1) public expected For what public do we want a video? The still not completed openSUSE goals say we aim at power user (or sort of). So we don't target newbie. But we have to ask ourselve who will need a video for documentation? I don't really have an answer. Most of the time I choose written doc against video, eventually with some screenshot. 2) subjects on priority order A subject asked was to connect to the net, but is that usefull (see 1))? What is (are) the subject where video have a substancial benefit comparing to simple explanation with/without screenshots? As we are on a marketting mailing list, I beg it's marketting, not techichal issues. 2-1) Installing openSUSE We can do a video showing an openSUSE installation, commented with voice over. What comment shall we use, we will see later... 2-2) Demonstrating YaST We could do a video showing YaST use, for example 2-2-1) to configure repositories and 2-2-2 to find a package, preferably an obscure one 2-3) desktop organisation. I can show how I organise my desktop, with 8 virtual desktops 2-3 I use to make lessons, I can make a special shot for video (last done, but for newbies, setup an article in openoffice, work photos with digiKam, make a nice poster with openoffice). I also have some course (here in french) http://fr.opensuse.org/Formation_d%27administrateur_Baby, I could make them videos (but all this is pretty much work) 3) Full video or screen dump? I know pretty well true video (with camcorder), I'm not familiar with screen dump software (in fact I know none really friendly, but I can learn :-) 4) goodies. On many videos, the image do not need to have a comment, but it's better with some music. I definitvely need somebody who could choose music for me. We also need opening and closing, if possible standard (same for all videos) - that is the 10 s at the beginning and at the end of the video 5) voice over We can use an existing video and add various languages. Here I added french http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCvtdy0b5UY 6) subtitles here I added subtitles. We could even make a video to show how we add subtitles :-)) thats all folks for now :-)) jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://pizzanetti.fr -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

I think we should focus on marketing video's. That means showing off cool stuff, preferably a bit unique to openSUSE (but doesn't have to be). Like Yast stuff, OBS. Something like a cool 1-minute screencast combining GNOME, KDE, XFCE and LXDE to show that we offer so much choice; a video showing how Yast allows you to install -debug or -devel packages with one click (super cool for developers! Something we should advertise...); a video showing how to get an OBS repository added & packages like a weekly KDE or GNOME snapshot installed. Many of those would probably require a 20 min screencast, then cutting & speeding it up to 1 or 2 minutes or so.
2) subjects on priority order A subject asked was to connect to the net, but is that usefull (see 1))?

Well... on that page I referenced three kind of videos. 1) a small shot showing my own desktop with video in run by a small compact camera; 2) the complete shot of the said camera, showing the computer screen during openSUSE installation. I can only shot 8 mn at a time with this camera (2Gb fat 32 files, HD 720p) 3) the same shot, from recordMyDesktop. Looks like RMD can neither record more than 10 minutes (at least as default from the GUI) For the final video, we probably have to mix these recording methods, not to be too boring. The present comment, when there is one, is in french (much easier for me to speak french when nothing is prepared :-). I can give * a basic english text written by hand * a basic voice over with the text. I need an enbglish speaker able to repeat the english text, preferably with a good accent (english one or may be NY one? I know the Texas one and don't beleive it to be good for us. It's not the sound of the accent that is a problem (I like accents :-) but the english have to be understood by bad english listeners, and so have to be worded s l o w a n d w i t h t h e s l l a b u s d e t a c h e d (not too much, of course :-)) jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://pizzanetti.fr -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

That is one of the points - work in progress should not go public. Videos are large files that can be shared among authoring team.
We should show something staged. Techno geek corner is the most common place where user will install openSUSE, but we want more. Don't we? Casual user environment, like living room, kids room, where one laptop is used from first touch with openSUSE download page, download (comment about duration instead of progress bar :), burning iso to media of your choice (USB stick for new computers, CD/DVD or older), where to find free burning software (short overview, good if we have some that doesn't require juggling as SUSE Studio Image writer), and so on.
For the final video, we probably have to mix these recording methods, not to be too boring.
For sure.

French is good for public using it, just as many other languages.

The present comment, when there is one, is in french (much easier for me to speak french when nothing is prepared :-). I can give
* a basic english text written by hand * a basic voice over with the text.
I need an enbglish speaker able to repeat the english text, preferably with a good accent (english one or may be NY one? I know the Texas one and don't beleive it to be good for us. It's not the sound of the accent that is a problem (I like accents :-) but the english have to be understood by bad english listeners, and so have to be worded s l o w a n d w i t h t h e s l l a b u s d e t a c h e d (not too much, of course :-))
Imho brittish sounds sexy, we could probably trick Andrew Wafaa or Will Stephenson or so?

In US commercials use Australian :) (commercials = someone was paid to find out what public likes) So, it is not that straight forward, it depends on locale. To underscore international character of the community we can use original sound track and dub English translation. Start with few words in original language, then lower the original volume and dub translation on it. Thant sounds like real time translations; translator has to capture some context before he/she can start translating. Also remember SUSE Studio award, it was one of the best news videos produced by Linux community. It kept my attention all the time, and not to forget, it was not boys-only show. In our case we can have speakers all over the world explaining parts of installation, with translation, for instance, in English. Having installation in the frame for boring parts, where speakers keep audience attention, and full screen for few input fields, with voice explaining what has to be entered, keep dynamics. Also, speeding up installation, as B. Wiederman did in his videos, is also something to consider. The only change would be to add speaker comment that we will speed up to the next stage, so that user doesn't feel tricked when real installation speed is not that high. I guess that Bernhard can produce videos for 11.4 as soon as artwork is done. Did jdd mention script? Yes, few times. I consider comments to this thread as proposals for parts of the script. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

yes, sure. That said for a video about install, there is little need for a script (excluding the text to read) it's even difficult to make a preliminary script, giving we don't master the sequences order (we have to follow the timeline) but it's only for this basic video... jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://pizzanetti.fr -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org
Here is the first complete clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MyPx7cmhAjg I can say right now that the most visible bug is that VirtualBox install began in 4x3 format when I try to make a 6x9 video... I dubbed an english sound track. However, writing the text beforehand was not practical, because I had to follow the install stream and don't know the exact content, so I recoded it during a clip run. I have to think a little before speaking english, so there where many silences I had to cut off the track on kdenlive :-) Tha second point to know is that kdenlive works very well and managed the various video formats the best it could do and without crashing. Visibly the kdenlive team made a great work last year :-). I think this clip can be use as reference between us to know where we have to work... I try to keep my page up to date :-) http://dodin.org/wiki/index.php?n=Photo.OpenSUSEVideos -- http://www.dodin.net http://pizzanetti.fr -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

I would personally go with screencasts instead of using a camera to capture the screen. It looks cleaner, frankly... And to give us an idea of what you'll be doing, it'd be great if you could try to speak english - no matter how bad that English is, doesn't matter, we can dub it later with a sexy voice by Will Stephenson or so :D It would just be nice to have any idea what you're saying now ;-)

what about using the existant ? for example, in the last months openqa is able to publish the result of testing in two forms screenshots, and assemble all that in a ogv. If you think two minutes about the power of the scripting, with one test script you are able to replay it the numerous times you need, and think just to change the locale at startup, and you get the same screenshots in all language you want for the litterally same price. check that here http://openqa.opensuse.org/ -- Bruno Friedmann Ioda-Net Sàrl www.ioda-net.ch openSUSE Member & Ambassador GPG KEY : D5C9B751C4653227 irc: tigerfoot -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

yes, that's very cool! with this (and at least for the install part), we could: * make an english model * publish the frame (the opening, the text written down to make the translation easier...) so any ambassador could publish his own version. thanks jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://pizzanetti.fr -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org
