[opensuse-marketing] how can you make people come to an install fest
I just come from a Mandriva Install fest. Pretty well annouced (including in a free news paper, 300.000 ex), in the center of a big town (Toulouse, France). 6 animators... 0 attendent. clearly, today, installing a linux distro do not require somebody to come somewhere. Having the very last Distro is not interesting either so what? I'm short of ideas... jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://www.facebook.com/pages/I-support-the-Linux-Documentation-Project/3720... http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-fan-page-of-Claire-Dodin/106485119372062?v... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org
** Reply Requested by 6/26/2010 (Saturday) ** some cents.... I think people will be more interested in participate at Linux Install fest if: - We provide a kind of certification for Install Fest participation - some guys really loves certifications specially the teenagers that are starting their life worker. - If the linux install fest have something different like some speakers, some presentations, Maybe some linux customer testimonial instead of only provide help to install linux distro - Any support from local University or Government - have install fest inside major events. - make install Fest happing in remote location instead of big cities could be helpful. Because for big cities Maybe install Fest are not so useful because they are having this at least for long 10 years as pointed by jdd, But for small cities could be more attractive to the attendants because they had never had a install fest party. - Maybe we can start to announce install Fest as part of some opensuse small meetings around the globe And not just install fest itself. - If we develop a kind of openSUSE certification for desktop users this certifications could be showed as workshops during install Fest. - Maybe if we do linux install fest ALWAYS together with some company that use openSUSE at their environment. - Linux Install fest for specific verticals like - linux install Fest for retail, linux install fest for academies, linux install fest for Government, linux install fest for financial institutions. - yeah yeah, I known that this could be difficult for us to understand - because SUSE is always SUSE, But if we announce or even focus that party for a specific public our results could be little different - I'm not sure if better or worst because I've never try But what I mean is that this point could be part of a brainstorm about the topic. at least, beautiful ladies always help to bring people to the parties, or not? I think people will be more interested in participate at Linux Install fest if:
- We provide a kind of certification for Install Fest participation - some guys really loves certifications specially the teenagers that are starting their life worker.
I'm not sure if this a correct approach. Certifications should be done by credited organizations so that have a meaning! Though having maybe an openSUSE program which can validate for non-professional usage those certifications, could be interesting. I mean non-professional because we maybe don't want to provide a conflict or have a paralel program that can endanger the work done by Novell on that field. Novell will need capital to invest on the community, lets try not to break their business models.
- If the linux install fest have something different like some speakers, some presentations, Maybe some linux customer testimonial instead of only provide help to install linux distro
Linux isn't what it used to be... and nowadays no one uses ISDN or PPP anymore, which I remember was the most dreadful cases during LIP's. Though there is good work that can be done to help people getting started in Linux, for example: * Information presents how the Linux filesystem is organized. * Information on special files like /dev/something. * True multi-tasking support. * Basic configuration of AppArmor/SELinux and the concepts behind it (probably irrelevant as modern AP's and Router/Modems do have built in firewalls). * Getting started with simple tasks, like checking email, configuring email and social networks accounts - ex: evolution, gwibber, etc.
- Any support from local University or Government
This can be done, but my personal experience provided me the following: - I've contacted the city hall in 2001 which provided me this options: 1. Place for Free, if I didn't use any kind of advertisement or sponsorship, else I had to pay. I've payed around 60.000$ PTR (around 300€) in 2001 for 2 days. 2. They have for sure a cultural program, try to arrange it so that your event is advertised by the city hall. This worked good for me. Getting a City Hall envolved also increases the notoriety of the event and will in most cases get more people. 3. Get in contact with local high schools, present them your program and invite the students!
- have install fest inside major events.
I'm a bit against it. I would not do anything that would endanger the cert programs for Novell, and specially, if it's not credited it's not usefull. But you can create a 'openSUSE Desktop Poweruser' or something like that and use a small cert for non-professional purposes.
- Maybe if we do linux install fest ALWAYS together with some company that use openSUSE at their environment.
I live in Aveiro, the heartbeating of Telecommunications Technology, mainly do to Portugal Telecom Innovation S.A., responsible for the first pre-paid phone card in the world (TMN Mimo), amongst many other technical innovations. We have also the Foundation University of Aveiro, which is currently listed in top 100 world best universities, and it's true strength resides on IT and Chemestry. Cities like this are great for LIP's. First because there is an extensive market available for students, and they always like to see their idols live. Having the local corporate business tissue involved on this events can be a great thing.
Just some thoughts from my own experience. I've tried to pull out an event for Fedora, and it didn't worked, and aborted it. If is anything I can help, feel free to nag me. nelson.
