[opensuse-marketing] RFC: Quick Intro to openSUSE Build Service
I wanted to hack together a 4 slide version to introduce the openSUSE Build Service and I'm currently at 16 slides ;-( I'd like to share the current content with you and would like to have your feedback on this. I'm not targetting exactly 4 slides but like to condense this a bit more. I guess I leave the competion slides in. The goal of the presentation should be to tease an ISV or an upstream project to ask me: Give me a demo of the Build service and tell me more details. Any feedback on the slides is more than welcome - and I volunteer to put the final slides up on the wiki as "reference material" for others giving presentations. I think the key here is to try and keep text on the slides to a minimum. Condense bullet points, to keep things short and sweet - if there is too much text people will concentrate more on the text than on what is being said. Easy to understand pictures are also very good. I'll try and have a massage around and see what I can come up with - I'm no presentation guru though ;-) All in all the info contained is great, but where is the "long" intro slide deck? I'd love to see that too. Regards, Andy -- Andrew Wafaa, openSUSE Member: FunkyPenguin. PGP: 0x3A36312F openSUSE: Get It, Discover It, Create It at http://www.opensuse.org

I agree with reducing the amount of text. Not just for what Andy says about concentration, but also because environment has an effect on ability to read text. If you're in a large room and sitting way in the back, or if the lighting atmosphere is not conducive to the projection, those all factor in prominently to the ability to grasp what is on the screen and the substance of the presentation.
Easy to understand pictures are also very good.
I can see a drawing of a packager sitting at a computer connected to a cloud and out comes logos of different distros. That would easily speak volumes what you've said in the first initial pages. The only time I truly find "wordy" presentations to be useful is when I reference the slides outside of the presentation. Without a speaker present, and just reading the slides, that's when its good to be wordy.
To me, the existence of slides 2 and 3 are redundant. ("What is.." and "Goals of"...) The goals of OBS should be well-defined and obvious within the explanation of what OBS is. I'd keep Slide 4 because it establishes credibility for OBS as sa well-established and effective tool that can be used by many. Do we have success stories of other distros packaging with OBS? Slide 5 - This type of display always annoys me in presentations. Placing dark letters against a dark color background makes it very difficult to read. But if I were to keep this, (with the color changes of course), I would recommend you use this as slide 3, and use the existing slide 3 to build on Slide 2 (as mentioned above) Slide 6 - I think if you're covering your points well initially during Slides 2 and 3, then Slide 6 becomes merely repetitive. Slides 8-10 -- I think you could reduce a lot of text by replacing it with screenshots. The competitor slides should remain as is. I guess it really depends on what you want to do for a presentation. I'm gathering what you're looking for is a quick lightning presentation? If so, then condensing as above is probably good. But for longer presentations, probably much of the existing stuff would remain intact (though lighten up on the amount of text) where you have the opportunity to dive into each point in more detail over an hourlong presentation period. Just my thoughts. If you want help on actual text condensation, let us know. Thanks for all the feedback I got. I'll condense this more now and will then ask for help with good graphics. IT should be a lightning presentation - and as said, I'd like to make it available Since I need to give this as Novell employee to a partner, my master version will use the Novell branding - but I propose that the final version for the openSUSE slide repository will use an openSUSE branding ;) Yes, a longer intro would be interesting as well - if anybody is interested in doing one, feel free to use my slides as inspiration ;).
