[opensuse-marketing] default webbrowser's startpage
All, What do you do when starting firefox for the first time after a fresh installation of openSUSE 11.0? I for myself change the homepage to something else (google). I think that the default startpage http://www.opensuse.org isn't very useful for the average user in everyday's use. I thought about implementing something like http://start.ubuntu.com/8.04 for openSUSE 11.1 - on the one hand this page offers the ability to search the web - IMO the most commonly used homepages (google, yahoo or whatever) nowadays, on the other hand it's a great way to promote openSUSE especially to new users not that familiar with the openSUSE services. Ok, we have that greeter at the first boot, but I think most users will instantly click close and that's it :) With such a startpage in the webbrowser we'd have the ability to raise the attention to the wiki, forums, OBS, bugzilla, the most common IRC support channels etc etc. Maybe a brief overview over the openSUSE project would be possible and last but definitely not least, we could extend the google search engine with a custom search for all openSUSE services - in that way that the user could click "search openSUSE" or "search the web". Most likely there are even more possibilities I cannot imagine yet. Unfortunately I haven't the required programming skills to create such a website, but I think there'll be others creating it with few effort. I'm in a serious hope that new users will keep this startpage at least longer as the current one. What do you think about it? Ah, I see. Then it's even better to come up with that discussion again :) Maybe we could get started immediately with creating such a startpage - no need to wait for openSUSE 11.1 IMO. Afterwards we could promote it with a blog post or something else. I'd write at lizards.o.o about it if you'd like and/or we could start a forums thread raising the attention on the availability of that page. Once openSUSE 11.1 hits the mirrors it could be declared the default. Enough time to design the details :) Any other comments? Ideas? Suggestions? Anyone? Best, Rupert

The first thing I do is to change it to iGoogle as well. We could definitely use a more useful start page with search and more resources.

There's been discussion of getting rid of the greeter, and I think the idea to use the start page to replace the greeter might be a good one. I've opened a bug here to track this: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=405773 Note that I'm not against people changing the start page -- a lot of new users will probably have a start page that they like using already (I'd keep using iGoogle because I have it personalized with stuff I use frequently... but we can make it a more useful default for users who don't have a preference. Thanks for bringing this up, Rupert. :-) Best, Zonker -- Joe 'Zonker' Brockmeier openSUSE Community Manager http://zonker.opensuse.org/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

Yeah, so let's get started in collecting specific ideas :) The RSS feed you came up with is a great one IMO. What do you think about my "promoting at lizards.o.o-idea" once it's done?

That's what I was thinking about. At least to users without a preference we should provide something useful. And for everybody else (especially n00bs) it's at least an eyecatcher before they decide to change it to something else. Kinda.. ah, I could get help here, I could contribute to openSUSE that way and stuff like that :) I got so many n00b questions in the forums lately - I was just curious that so many n00bs aren't familiar with the very basic services openSUSE has to offer (the OBS for example).
Thanks for bringing this up, Rupert. :-)
Thanks for opening the bug. Should we discuss there or here or on both channels? I could maybe come in touch with Robert to ask him if he could allocate some ressources once we have a raw concept. Best Rupert
