[opensuse-marketing] build an art team
Hello, I found a little problem over artwork for openSUSE, so I'll try to give some funny examples to illustrate it. # Alternative # I've got a bit of a problem over artwork for openSUSE, so I'll try to give some funny examples to illustrate it. Yesterday, I had a brief conversation with Zonker on #opensuse-marketing channel which was triggered by the feature request on openFATE: https://features.opensuse.org/308761 Is openFATE the good place to contribute graphics for openSUSE? I don't think so, because the screening team has a lot of work to do which should be taken place. Just then, I remember the voting that Zonker made the other day for 11.2 DVD cover. Although Raul made a cover just for fun, it was lucky that zonker recognized it and made a poll. Jimmac u had right that was the old style About the same time, I used the same old look for the posters for launch parties. But with my poster, things got weird. Strainu from Bucarest came to me and asked the sources for it. I happily accepted his request and in a short while he got it. But the funny thing is, that he went to nicubunu and asked him to change the text on it. Why on earth must a openSUSE member ask the Fedora art team to help with this ? Btw, nicubunu, googled for the "fifth leg font". Take a look at the result: http://www.google.de/search?hl=de&source=hp&q=fifth+leg +font&btnG=Google-Suche&meta=&aq=f&oq= There are a lot more things like that - some time ago I made a twitter wallpaper for suseROCKs because he would like to have and recently Zonker also used it. It's funny because he can find that wallpaper in the wiki. The point here is, when I look in the wiki, there are a lot of different pages in which I can find artworks. Sometimes I can find a good artwork and I'm sure the artist who made it has talent for graphic arts. What do we do with "features" like 308761? Should we decline them because they are not the things for openFATE or harsher because they are not good enough? Or, give that guy a room for building up his skills for graphics in an "art team"? How should we deal with the other guys who made graphics and have talent? Let them put their graphics in the wiki and hope others can find and use them? Or, give them a chance to make graphics as tasks if needed, in openSUSE Art-Team? IMO, it is important to give people a good chance to contribute to the project in such ways. There were several persons on the marketing channel yesterday and we got the idea, why not pack such "features" in a package like "artwork-contrib" and if there are too much candidates, give people the chance to vote which artwork should be in the package? I think we have enough talented members and a lot of users who might be interested in contributing in this way and we can build openSUSE Art-Team. Are there anyone who think that what I want is right? If the answer is yes, step forward and say Yes ;) jimmac & garrett, I think an art team is not really possible without you. So, I hope you will be the first two guys that step forward. Then, we should have a meeting, maybe on the artwork channel, yeah we have such a thing ;) When we have enough people who step forward, I'm going to make a doodle vote for finding the best date for it. br gnokii -- more http://karl-tux-stadt.de/ktuxs http://www.xing.com/go/invita/11208336 http://twitter.com/karltuxstadt http://identi.ca/karltuxstadt -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

I think we have enough talented members and a lot of users who might be interested in contributing in this way and we can build openSUSE Art-Team.
Although I don't have the talent for art and cannot create attractive artworks for openSUSE, I expect many talented artists to be interested in and join the Art-Team. ;-) However, one thing I'm very concerned about is, legal or trademark issue. As you may know, we can find several openSUSE-themed wallpapers on the web. But most of them don't comply with the guidelines. http://en.opensuse.org/Artwork:Brand http://en.opensuse.org/Buttons_and_Banners#Use_of_openSUSE_graphics_.28offic... Once the Art-Team will successfully make the package of good looking artworks for openSUSE, will it be considered an *official* package or an *unofficial* one? I'm unsure of the borderline between official and unofficial. My understandings are: * If the package (and artworks in it) is considered *official* ... - Every artworks have to be compliant with the guidelines. This may get in the way of free-wheeling creativities of the artists. - Can use the term "openSUSE" as a part of the package name (and name of the artworks in it). - Can be included in official installation DVD/CD. * If the package (and artworks in it) is considered *unofficial* ... - Artists can freely modify the official artworks and logos in their artworks, because those are considered "fair use". - Cannot use the term "openSUSE" as a part of the package name (and name of the artworks in it). - Cannot be included in official installation DVD/CD. Please point to some factual errors in my understandings, if you find. Many of you may wonder why I'm concerned about such a thing. Yes, you are right. I can agree, the more important thing at this moment is, taking the first step forward. However, this issue should be an important factor for the Art-Team in the near future and I think it would be helpful not only for potential Art-Team members but also for whole marketing team to share the basic concepts. btw: u can find in our wiki enough "logos" they not take care of the guidelines ;) Whats happen when u need a graphic? Some times people find the mailaddress for artwork and maybe there take one care of it. Some times know people who does graphics and went to them. and some times people try to make it himself, with take care of the guidelines or not, with skills or not. I am sure thats not really a good kind do doing it!

I think official and unoffical are not the right words. Its just artwork the package was only a example for what can be. There are many points the have to be cleared example: is there place on DVD/CD ;) Or the licenses of the work

yeah thats right many of graphics are produced in the process to take care of the ambassador program. An I think the marketing team needs often graphics all time br gnokii

Hi,
Once the Art-Team will successfully make the package of good looking artworks for openSUSE, will it be considered an *official* package or an *unofficial* one?
Anything from the openSUSE Art-Team, once its formed, would of course be official. What else would make something official? The project, represented by the board, even can decide over the usage of the trademark. So you shouldn't get hung up on this. Oh and in general: I keep seeing that people bring this official/unofficial topic up. Remember, this is our project! Everything we do is official done by openSUSE! There is no other party involved that needs to give its blessing or anything. The only thing that can happen is that someone in the project disagrees with you and you have to find a compromise that everyone is happy with. But apart from that there is no process, committee or person who makes something official. There is only us (yes, that means everybody that participates). Henne -- Henne Vogelsang, openSUSE. As I was suggesting in irc, - Create a place on the lines of http://gnome-look.org (may be call it - http://en.opensuse.org/arts ) - Integrate this page with the rest of the wiki for the sign-in, auth. etc. - Allow anyone to upload any pictures or wallpapers they made - Have RSS updates (or) mailing lists for any wallpapers (logos/ images/ themes) added , which will notify about new / modified images - A team of moderators (volunteers) can reject any wallpaper (if found to contain porn / offensive pictures) - Other glamorous items like, Voting / ranking / download stats etc. can also be proivded if possible P.s: (Shouldnt there be some software already doing most of these ? gallery ? ) Okay ? gnokii btw Thanks for this very nice initiative and I would love to see some new wallpapers for openSUSE :-) -- Sankar http://psankar.blogspot.com -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org
Hello, first let us take care about the importanst thing - build a art-team. Whatever could be it never take place with people they take care of it ;)
As I was suggesting in irc,
- Create a place on the lines of http://gnome-look.org (may be call it - http://en.opensuse.org/arts )
There exists such a place http://suse-art.org/ Its the same owner like gnome or kde-look, Frank Karlitschek. U had the chance to met him on conference.
- Integrate this page with the rest of the wiki for the sign-in, auth. etc. - Allow anyone to upload any pictures or wallpapers they made - Have RSS updates (or) mailing lists for any wallpapers (logos/ images/ themes) added , which will notify about new / modified images - A team of moderators (volunteers) can reject any wallpaper (if found to contain porn / offensive pictures) - Other glamorous items like, Voting / ranking / download stats etc. can also be proivded if possible
But when u look on suse-art there are many things that not take care about guidlines or "porn" ;)
P.s: (Shouldnt there be some software already doing most of these ? gallery ? )
Yes there existing software for doing such things
Okay ?
gnokii btw Thanks for this very nice initiative and I would love to see some new wallpapers for openSUSE :-)
I take this initative not for create more wallpaper or such stuff but rather than give people a better change to contribute to openSUSE. br gnokii

By all means. Please coordinate you're efforts and attract new artwork talent by forming a Team. This is a resource we could greatly use. We frequently need artwork for all kinds of purposes, not only the distribution, and up until now this rests on the shoulders of a few people (namely you, robert, jimmac and garrett). We also have a lot of teams/areas in the project that, uhm how do i say this politely, use artwork of questionable quality. As someone who has little talent but somehow is affine to this art I'm always shocked to see that. Most of the time those graphics are in this quality because people don't know where to go to get something done by a real artist, so they get out gimp and do it themselves. A group of people, easily identified, to go to for all kind of graphic artwork would be a big step forward for the project. Oh an i think graphic arts is something that greatly lives from artists influencing each other. So get on with it! :) BTW: i think Rajko has a point in saying that this should include somehow suse-art.org. Please think about how to use this resource for the project.
