As for openSUSE, I'm an elected member of the current Board, was part of the "bootstrap" Board before that, and have been actively contributing to SUSE and openSUSE since quite a lot of time (something like 7 or 8 years, AFAICR). By helping on mailing-lists, on IRC, by providing packages in my own repository (the now defunct "guru" repository), Packman and in OBS repositories, by being on op on most of our openSUSE IRC channels, etc...
