[opensuse-marketing] openSUSE popularity rises
Just wanted to mention quickly that openSUSE popularity continues to rise on Facebook. Our Facebook group page [1] has seen an increase of about 700 new members since late December. And the huge number of people there is proving to be a valuable cache of information we are able to use to further our marketing efforts. Keep up the great work, people! This is great news.. what sorts of things can be done to increase the growth? More articles in the Linux blog world and traditional print media? Maybe a website feature much akin to the "openSUSE for Ubuntu refugees" article that Roger posted the other day? I'll be frank, the openSUSE website is good but lacks a flashy "hard sell" page to tell users why they should choose openSUSE over other distros. I have recently set up an opensuse.org/about as we didn't have that. As it's not being linked to from anywhere we can use it as a scratch place for the time being. I have recently uploaded a 1 page document with arguments about openSUSE (cookies for who can find it on our wiki. Hint: talking points). This page could be integrated with the about page: that could feature a two- column thing with screenshot - little text - screenshot - little text - etc based on the document and other talking points and the screenshots already on opensuse.org/screenshots and other places in our wiki. Who feels like making this? If the column thing is not your thing, just making single list of stuff with screenshot - text - screenshot - text would be fine. This page won't be incredibly pretty - altough a wiki master can probably make it look more decent - but it could be the base for a decent static webpage made at a later point. IF anyone does this, ping me in a separate mail, I'll go over it and help out a bit. /Jos -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+owner@opensuse.org

/Jos For that matter, I think the website could use a redesign. We don't even have a simple navigation bar which is an established paradigm.

If you give more details to "simple navigation bar" then it is possible to discuss. With my understanding of the term, we have it as top black bar that connects different openSUSE websites. I guess that you have something else in mind. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+owner@opensuse.org

-- Regards, Rajko That is essentially it, but it is missing on the homepage of opensuse.org. Honestly, it makes for a very counter-intuitive introduction.

It is not that much "very", but I agree, we missed that one :) -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+owner@opensuse.org

-- Regards, Rajko Yeah. I'm very much used to nice navigation bar with dropdowns, and considering how scattered and the weird places some things are in, it'd make sense to have it there.

There are some great AJAX templates out there, tho I'm not sure where openSUSE stands on the whole nasty Oracle debates. I await HTML5 with bated breath. :) On Sat, Apr 14, 2012 at 10:15 PM, Roger Luedecke <roger.luedecke@gmail.com> wrote:

We have top bar on other sites. It just happened that landing page because of its special status was not considered for changes. It is just oversight :) -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+owner@opensuse.org
