[opensuse-marketing] Translation of openSUSE posters
Heya all, I've just finished updating the posters we made last year at SCALE in the USA. They are ready for translation and I can then print a bunch in time for the openSUSE 12.1 release parties! Who's up for translating them? download the svg files at the link below, translate them (open in Inkscape, edit the text) and mail them back to me... I will try to get at least Spanish (in the USA and Brazil and Spain), Portugese (Brazil), Chinese (Taiwan/China) and a few European languages (German, French, more?) printed. Here is a little translation how-to: 1.Get Inkscape if you don't have it yet: zypper in inkscape 2. Get the file you want to translate from GitHub: - go to https://github.com/openSUSE/artwork/tree/master/posters/ - navigate to the 'openSUSE is cool' folder - click on one of the svg files you want to translate - click on 'raw' to download it 3. Open the file and customize the text by double-clicking it and typing. 4. Once done, save the file and email it to me 5. tap yourself on the back for a great job! mmm... I have two problems; 1 I don't know how to work with Inkscape. Your instructions are very easy, but when I translate to spanish, I need more space into the "bullets". So, how I could resize it?
We already have a volunteer translating the flyer in Spanish, thanks Manuel Trujillo!

English is *very* compact ============================ If we want to be able to translate that stuff, we really have to be careful with the layout, because the English language is *very* compact as compared to most latin languages, especially french: something like "customize spins with OBS" becomes "adaptez vos distributions dérivées à l'aide de l'OBS" (not the actual translation in the posters, just an example) So making a layout where you manage to barely get the English text into it is going to prove very difficult to be translated, at least without playing some tricks on the layout. What I did was to lower the line height when it didn't fit (and it never did ;)), changing it from the default 1.25 to 1.1, and that usually is enough. When it isn't, I used a negative kerning on the text to make it less wide, which works too (but only to a certain extent, more than -0.20 wouldn't be easily readable). See "Creating text" here: http://inkscape.org/doc/advanced/tutorial-advanced.html or "Baseline Settings and Manual Kerning" here: http://www.ffnn.nl/pages/articles/media/inkscape-text-tricks.php (those are very important and useful features for typesetting, everyone should read it and play with it a bit, it's really easy :)) So when someone makes the original work in English, please, pretty please try to not have it "barely fit" in there because that won't be possible for any latin language for sure. This could help us to not have several versions of the same file, I mean, instead of a file ending with -FR, -BR, -EN, ... we can start to use just one file with many layer, each one for each language added. I will take care of turning them into PDF and PNG where needed to make sure they all have the same quality. About the layers - that complicates things and this is already complicated enough... I fixed the tumbleweed images. I also moved the text out of the other ones and into a separate layer for each one. If someone has a good idea on how to handle this better, go ahead :D Also, would someone with access to the repo and a *fast* computer and network be willing to generate the png and pdf files for the tumbleweed and tumbleweed-light ones and maybe also for the translated stuff? My computer and network really are too slow for this... Make sure you make at least 300 DPI pdf's and png's... Just did a commit, moving things around and adding some fixes. Thanks a lot all! As promised I just finished them ;-) It took me 4.5 hours for basically 3 posters. I did not managed to send them to the repo, I am a newbie at Github so I send you links from my Dropbox to Download them. I made some changes on the Greek layout so that things fit in. There is a mistake at the Tumbleweed, the first terminal command is hidden by the Geeko, give it a look, I could not correct that. Meheh, downloading and uploading them on my 100kb/sec down & 30kb/sec up network connection will take me many hours... Could someone else please get these in the git repo? Please? And they also need to be turned into proper PDF's and PNG's...

Yes, Ray Chen also told me. I will fix that.
By the way, I ONLY need the SVG files from all of you! I will take care of turning them into PDF and PNG where needed to make sure they all have the same quality.
About the layers - that complicates things and this is already complicated enough... I will however modify the current ones to have only the text in a separate layer.
