RE: [opensuse-marketing] SocNet Discussion during Community Week
When I mentioned creating a poll, it was more to find out what methods in general people prefer. It wasn't solely about XMPP.
I agree on the issues it raises which is why I agrreed that it wasn't a priority, but something that should be kept in mind.

Andy

I can setup a poll today to see what people think if tou like?
Just my thoughts on this before we poll:
* What problem does this solve that we need to address right now?
I see one thing: Corporate firewalls are a problem for potential
participants who might be able to connect via Jabber. The counter to
this is that there are other services that can do the same thing, and
I *think there are probably free Jabber servers with IRC connectors
that are available already. So, would we be better off just pointing
people to those?
Some people don't like IRC but use Jabber. What's our net in terms of
additional participants here?
* Do we have someone to administer this and actual hardware to run it?
Right now, we're still working out kinks in our "official"
infrastructure, I'm not sure adding Jabber to the mix w/in the next
six months is advisable.
* Does this stack up higher than other problems we have on our plate?
I'd say probably not, though it's a good idea. My vote would be to put
this on the wiki as a future action item to tackle when we have other
project infrastructure issues solved. Other thoughts?
Best,
Zonker
