[opensuse-marketing] Work work!
Dear friends, A while ago the following list was created: http://piratepad.net/1BhrwTboSg It is a list of things we can do for the ambassadors to support them in what they do - spreading the word about openSUSE. This list is huge - and many of the things won't be done quickly. But there is low-hanging fruit in there. Some of those things we already have, either on the old wiki or already on the new one. It is being gathered and linked to on http://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Marketing Now what is needed is that ppl (you, yes) go through the list and either add links to the wiki pages where such information can be found, or add more information. It ain't difficult - it just takes some of your time. You've all been enthousiastic about doing stuff, now's the time to step up ;-) Go to the piratepad link and see if there is something you are interested in. And pick it up - announce you want to do it and start doing it! You don't have to do it completely, or perfectly - if you're english is bad, no problem. If you only know half of what you need to know, put that half in there - even if it's just notes, it doesn't matter. Add the links and mail us to let others look at it and add their thoughts. In general, what is needed is somebody to START a page and make a beginning. From there onwards it will move, I promise. So if you want to do more than *discuss* things, if you want to really make a difference, this is how to do it! Questions? Ask on the list or contact me privately. Cheers, Jos

When you create a new pad on piratepad (or other *normal* EtherPad clone sites), the URL of the pad will be random, so that we can't remember which pad is for which topic. That's because I recommended using EtherPad *Pro* clone such as iEtherPad, where we can create a pad and give it the name we want. See for example, http://ownja.ietherpad.com/openSUSE-Marketing-discussions Anyway, if we continue brainstorming on piratepad, we need a wiki page where the links of pads are concentrated and we can refer to which pad is for which topics. Yup, see my other mail. I'd love to have a better etherpad installation than piratepad. If you or anyone feel like creating it in a suse-studio image, I can get the sysadmins to use it for us. How about that ;-)
Anyway, if we continue brainstorming on piratepad, we need a wiki page where the links of pads are concentrated and we can refer to which pad is for which topics.
I have put quite a few piratepad links on the wiki already. Feel free to add others at the appropriate places. Our wiki needs a LOT of love to support our ambassadors so please go ahead!

It would be great if we have our own EtherPad. We, openSUSE Weekly News Japanese translation team are now using iEtherPad for translating of OWN and we recognize EtherPad as the most qualified tool for such a task. The only thing we concern is, that iEtherPad is run by an individual and there's no guarantee. In the other post on -boosters list, Pavol recommended us to create an EtherPad package in OBS first. I'd love to help this task, but unfortunately I don't have enough skill and knowledge about packaging complex programs such as EtherPad on OBS yet. :-( Although I myself haven't installed EtherPad on my system yet, the general and detailed instructions on installing EtherPad can be found at: http://pauleira.com/13/installing-etherpad/ And we can see how Fedora folks have packaged EtherPad at: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Etherpad

Which do you think better ? - All the links to the marketing-related pads (including openSUSE Conference, Ambassadors Program, and so on) are concentrated on Marketing portal page - The links to the openSUSE Conference related pads can be found on Conference top page, the links to the Ambassadors Program related pads can be found on Ambassadors top page, and so force. Yeah. I hope somebody who does have some knowledge of this steps up... ? Anyone ?

That's what I did, you can find what you need in the place where it belongs...
Best,
Jos et al, I would like to develop this topic: [HIGH] for install fests. I would like to ask for 'permission' to develop this on a temporary wiki page that can later be transferred to the final version, would this be possible? nelson On Tue, 2010-08-31 at 13:26 +0200, Jos Poortvliet wrote:

Nature of the wiki is that all there is temporary, so give some title that will not need change any soon and go ahead. The titles in the wiki are at the same time URLs, so it is nice not to break them. It is possible to "move" article to new title and MediaWiki will create redirect, but we (the Wiki team) don't like them as it adds to maintenance effort. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

Raiko, Thanks for your reply. I would like also to take this opportunity and ask for advice. What would be the best way of indexing in 3 or 4 documents which share are related to single topic, which could be 'market studies' under a possible Marketing category? By the way, are there templates (ex: marketing) or anything? Thanks in advance, nelson -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

Without much thinking use category to collect them in one place, and also use prefix "openSUSE:" as that are articles for use by marketing team, so no other namespace can be used.See: http://en.opensuse.org/Help:Namespace Later when you have articles and category we can: * list them manually under section "See also" or "Related" common in Wikipedia articles. * using <categorytree> tag create index, usually top right, that will be automatically updated as soon as new article is added to the category. See any portal page for examples. * third way is to create navigation bar on the top, like: http://en.opensuse.org/Package_repositories http://en.opensuse.org/Template:Repositories_navbar This way I would like to avoid as it is pure manual update of the links, which never worked well. It is fine for very few articles, but mentioned "Repositories navbar" is already above readability limit (5-7 links). Name of category can be "Marketing studies", or even more specialized name that will be added as category (subcategory) to the "Marketing studies". To add article to a category put [[Category:Marketing studies]] at the bottom of the article, after all text, one category per line. Main category for marketing is (surprise :) : http://en.opensuse.org/Category:Marketing so "Marketing studies" will belong there. See also: http://en.opensuse.org/Category:Wiki_editing_help
By the way, are there templates (ex: marketing) or anything?
We have some. One of links in above category lists frequently used: http://en.opensuse.org/Help:Standard_templates I would use template {{Intro|Short intro to the article.....}} to introduce topic. Looking list of all templates I can't see anything marked "marketing": http://en.opensuse.org/index.php?title=Special:AllPages&from=11.1&to=Zypper&namespace=10 It may be good to create some that will connect all of the marketing in one whole.
Thanks in advance,
You are welcome :) (this was long reading, isn't it)
