[opensuse-marketing] openSUSE 11.3 launch plan where to put in the wiki?
Moin, i just tried to put in the wiki the draft of the 11.3 launch plan. Hmm, where to put it? Old or new wiki? I guess here the answer is pretty clear - new wiki, right? But where should I create the page? I find the marketing portal, http://wiki.opensuse.org/Portal:Marketing Should I create http://wiki.opensuse.org/Team/11_3_Launch (according to the 11.2 launch)? Only put stuff in the new wiki if you want to participate in the transition and if you want to learn about the concept of the new wiki. Otherwise use the old one.

No sub-pages except where it makes sense is one of the big new things in the new wiki. Bringing order into content does not happen in the URL. It happens with wiki features like namespaces, categorization or navigational bars. Please read http://wiki.opensuse.org/Portal:Wiki and if you still have questions contact us. I assume that launch parties are distro presentation, so it fits in Main namespace (articles without prefix) and created link to page: http://wiki.opensuse.org/Release_launch_parties Page still has to be created. Link is in Events section of: http://wiki.opensuse.org/Portal:Marketing BTW, I have to reorganize that portal, as I would like that topic related navigation to be always on the same spot on every page, and that is the right side of the page. It will make life of wiki visitors easier. Once they learn where is topic navigation it will be there independent of the page they visit. One of ideas for the new wiki is to keep some pages on the fixed URL, like above, not to change it like Release_launch_parties_11.3 then next Release_launch_parties_12.0 and so on. IMO, it is better to keep that stuff in the same location, so once we publish it in the blogs, mail lists, forums and other places on the web any visitor will have no problem to find current information. The launch party should contain related distro information, like next release schedule, general information about releases, support life time etc. For now one page should be enough, if demand for space grows we can create separate portal that will point to regional pages, and the current Release_launch_parties use as redirect to portal. The need for regional organization is similar to translation to other languages, so whatever solution is applied in one can be used in the other.

One of things in the wiki, that is not usual in normal web pages, is that bread crumbs are useless. Wiki has no depth, all articles are the same. See http://wiki.opensuse.org the bread crumbs right below top black line. It is always only one page that is listed: http://wiki.opensuse.org/Portal:Marketing gives Wiki > Portal:Marketing http://wiki.opensuse.org/Portal:Marketing/Events gives Wiki > Portal:Marketing/Events Note absence of second > in place of / . Portal:Marketing/Events is a single page; the only unusual thing is strange characters in the URL and the title. Ditto, admins and users create navigational structure within some pages and we decided to go with one based on Wikipedia practice. They have much more experience with MediaWiki then we do and have extensive documentation on where to use subpages (slash / in the URL) and where not. In short, they banned subpages from Wikipedia areas that are presented to the casual visitors. They can be used, but set of rules is half page long, so for casual wiki editors, that don't want to dive into details, it is the easiest to remember not to use them at all. There are too many problems if used as we did in the old wiki. For instance, one is that you can't create article title: "Differences 11.2/11.3" without having unwanted link to non existing and not wanted page "Differences 11.2", that will be listed as wanted page and will call inexperienced wiki editors to create it. We had similar things happening in the old wiki; subpage without main page.

This is just to use opportunity and advertise a bit more new ideas how to create content in the new wiki that will be easy on content creators, help browse and search wiki by visitors, and be not so labor intensive on people that maintain the wiki. :) -- Regards Rajko, -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org
