Initiative is excellent, as long as we're moving forward as a group and not at cross purposes.
I don't need to personally approve every initiative, and -- in fact -- would prefer not to. :-) But, I do hope we'll have consensus among the people doing the ambassador work and make sure that we have some agreement.

Let me make it clear to you gnokii. Why do you think you own openSUSE and can do whatever you want with the community without understanding a bit of what another community member tried to do? Your behavior is showing signs of dictatorship and hunger for name and fame. Free Media Persons are people who already have a DVD and want to share with others who live near to his place. This is one of the basic things in Free Software. If one wants to find a person near to him who has a dvd, he should have a place to go and check on openSUSE wiki. That's what I created and it was the right thing to do. But you marked it for deletion without informing me or the list and without understanding the meaning of the page (I know your english knowledge is poor and I know I should not point it out but that makes me think that you did not understand the text I written over there). I ask you to show cause. - ADM -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

Yes, I think I can when you guys stop pushing me to believe that you are mocking it. Explain me why a place to list yourself as a person providing downloaded .iso medias or CD/DVDs in your locality should be marked as "Nonsense"!!!!??? http://en.opensuse.org/OpenSUSE_Free_Media_Persons
Your bit is getting old. And to be honest, the way you are trying to push things, I know turns a lot people off Free/Opensource Software as something Marxist. You are doing more harm than good.
I am not trying to provide some "turn on" to people as per their liking. People must know why they should join Free Software Movement, why this is needed and what are the benefits. Mere technical answers would leave them with the idea that this is a good piece of software that I can use as "alternative" to my non-free system. But if they understand the correct meaning of free software they will feel that this is not just an alternative but this is the only ethical choice. In that way I think I might not be as harmful as you said.
Free Media Persons doesn't exist in the OpenSUSE Project. Gnokii has written an better Place for this...
It is not supposed to be an official project but must exist as a voluntary one.
I think thats the problem you think we should promote the next release other think this "Free Media Person" is for new users ;) The only problem is was no discussion about this here.

Perhaps someone will care to enlighten me on what is acceptable contributions and what is not? Now this is an innocent question and so don't read to much into it. I thought what ADM initiated was a good idea, not knowing that it would provoke a storm. I signed up as an Ambassador because I would like to spread some OpenSUSE love around. I am really new to this whole ambassadorial thing and while I have been a SUSE/SLED/OpenSUSE for a few years it is only now I decided to do something to contribute back. Eric, It's true that both threads led to a reduction in civility and camaraderie and its sad. It is not, however, a reflection of what you can/cannot discuss. ADM was free to bring up the issue of GNU/Linux versus Linux, as it is a concern that *some* people have. But the rhetoric on his side as well as by responders escalated to the point of thread-destruction. It should be a lesson to all of us to 1) turn the other cheek when anyone tries to instigate and 2) not allow threads to get hijacked. That's where the problem came here and why some people said enough already. It was not a lack of contribution or thereof, but rather a lack of productivity. As for your question specificially about what defines contribution, it boils down basically to two things: 1) Contribute to the quality of the Project and 2) You contribute by promoting the project. That's basically it. Now, as for applying for openSUSE Membership, we, the openSUSE Board, evaluate on a case-by-case basis to verify that some level of significant contribution has been made in the past. That means we look for bug reports you may have filed, wiki edits, blogs promoting openSUSE, participation in mailing lists, translations, etc. Membership, not to be confused with Ambassadorship, is really the only area at this point in time where we measure a person's contribution to the project. And membership is *only* open to those who have made contributions, not to people who apply saying "I want to join and contribute." So basically, keep doing what you feel is right to promote openSUSE as an Ambassador and make sure we all know about it. I understand now...thank you...yeah taking things personally can be detrimental to discussions. However, the Free Media Persons programme, does other people think it is a good idea? I really do not mind buying some blank DVDs and stick them with "legit" CD stickers and pass them on to anyone who are interested. Perhaps having a link on the main openSUSE (I spell it correct for the 1st time yay!) Portal for those interested in getting some in their areas? It is a great idea, and we already do this for long time now: "If you would like a free copy of openSUSE or openSUSE-Education DVD, please get it collected from the following address below(no shipping, for events and promotional activities see http://en.opensuse.org/PromoDVD), you can also drop in with your computer for free installation mail on free-install@cyberorg.info to find the available time for installation." http://groups.google.com/group/opensuse-india It would be really nice to get everyone willing to do similar thing listed on one central place, that is why I said ADM's Free Media Persons idea was a good one, we should be taking that forward.

Are you sure 11.0 is still the last official release? wikipedia states last stable release is 11.1<Latest stable release 11.1 / 2008-12-18; 6 months ago>. So does the openSUSE download site. <For the latest stable version (openSUSE 11.1) head over to software.openSUSE.org >

11.1 is the latest stable and "official" release.
