[opensuse-marketing] The way of ambassador
Hi I am a coordinator of Russian translation team and fun of SuSE since from 2002 year. During the all of this period I popularize the Linux and openSUSE in particularly. As a programmer (Qt/C++/Java/Delphi/SQL), I try to develop my program for multiplatform, for easy migration from windows to linux. During the last years by my energies, to openSUSE were migrated 5 private businessmen’s , several private persons. Local intranet (network) of our condominium, under control of openSUSE 10.3. But I think that is small from that what I can do. I am living in industrial region. In our region, there are a range of company which work in different fields such as metal still, coil, shipping industry. The local network of the small company consist more then 50 computers. The biggest have approximately more than 3000 computers. Also there are a lot of colleges, Institute, academeies, which train personnel / people for these companies. The most of them still using MS Windows, and use Linux system only as server system (database, file server, domain controller). But owing to some conditions, I think you know which (high payment to MS and so on), many company are going migrate to open source systems and not going – they are do it now! As you see, there is a big field for openSUSE marketing. After a conversation, which I have with it-managers of some companies, I make a list which Linux system they are going install on their computers: FreeBSD Ubuntu ASPLinux (clone RED HAT) Fedore core And only several managers told me that may will try install openSUSE. My questions and answers: Why we have this result? I don’t know. But I’d like to improve this situation. From which I must to start? I think that from some presentations of openSUSE. What, I must have for it? I think that any kind of posters, prospects, t-shirts, free boxes. What any can improve my voluntary? I think that some payment for my traveling, rent of accommodation for presentation (if necessary) and so on. All comments and advise are welcome. Here's my guess... As you say yourself, they're mainly interested in using GNU/Linux/free unix on *servers*. * Most people (wrongfully) consider openSUSE a very desktop centric distro. * People don't know that the dvd has a server/text mode installation option. * They don't know about yast ncurses, apparmor, xen and other nice server features * They don't realize that openSUSE is the base of SLES Personally I think this is a rather big problem for openSUSE - server admins are often technical users and "gatekeepers" to many machines - and I'm sure pushing openSUSE as a server system a bit more, would also spill over on SLES sales. The magic solution to the problem - as proven by Ubuntu - is to provide a dedicated server cd, hence I filed this openfate some time ago. https://features.opensuse.org/305664 Personally I think openSUSE could blow Fedora and Ubuntu out of the water in this particular niche market (home servers and "self-supported" servers in the enterprise) if only we tried. But... I fear that the fools in high places don't understand that pushing openSUSE as a server is good for SLES sales, not bad. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

I'm the systems dpt. chief, and we have more than 50 servers. All, with the exception of four FreeBSD machines, are opensuse servers. I'm using opensuse like a server base since 2004 without any problem (included oracle databases). At the office, the 90% of desktops are opensuse. Yes, opensuse is not only good for the desktop, but also for the servers. -- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Have a nice day ;-) TooManySecrets /"\ ASCII Ribbon Campaign | FreeBSD Since 4.x \ / - NO HTML/RTF in e-mail | GNU/Linux Since 1994. You're preaching to the choir here ;-) But thanks for supporting my claim that businesses also use Linux distros without long lifetime and commercial support - and on a pretty big scale too. But don't you agree that when it comes to "mindshare" in the server space, openSUSE is behind. My impression is that if you ask a random Linux user (who isn't a savvy openSUSE user) to mention some good server distros, he's very likely to mention 5-8 distros above openSUSE - *if* he associates openSUSE with servers at all. In some of the forums I visit people often ask for suggestions for good server distros, and it's very rare that anyone (other than me) suggests openSUSE. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org
Well, meantime I think that spreading of one or another distro depends of some country/region. I and people who migrate to suse use it as a desktop and server as well. And all of them are fully satisfied. BUT main problem in others of my questions: the way of improving of this situation. And how volunteer in the regions may to obtain help from leaders of openSUSE. What do you think the most efficient *help* is ? You've illustrated what you need in the top post. Which are the most important and necessary for you to promote and introduce openSUSE in your region among those ? As Zonker mentioned in the previous post, at this time we don't have a separate budget for this. Therefore, we have to ponder what are the most efficient (and, hopefully inexpensive) things. And, for example, if you say you need posters, do you mean you need printed posters or template file that can be modified as you like and printed out by yourself ? What kind of catch-phrase do you expect in the posters ? I hope all ambassadors will enter such arguments by offering their ideas and reporting their experiences. ;-) Best, -- _/_/ Satoru Matsumoto - openSUSE Member - Japan _/_/ _/_/ Marketing/Weekly News/openFATE Screening Team _/_/ _/_/ mail: helios_reds_at_gmx.net / irc: HeliosReds _/_/ _/_/ http://blog.geeko.jp/author/heliosreds _/_/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

I carried out several presentation but the audience always ask me, for example free box and some logo attribute of openSUSE But, it is not very important.

The best, I think, have a little budget (elementary) for benzine/petrol/gasoline for traveling and for printing posters in print shop on native language.

The best way have template file of posters, which will be translated on my native language (by myself) and then printed out. Of Course, exellent is that printing not by me on printer but in print shop. Second. My desire, is to have a template file for computer presentation.
