[opensuse-marketing] How to contribute to openSUSE?
Hi openSUSE marketing team I've been considering ways to contribute to the openSUSE project now that I've been using it as an OS for several months. I have a background as an engineer, but I could probably contribute more effectively on the marketing side these days. So, I'm reaching out to this team for ideas. I may have met some of you already via email since I started promoting openSUSE inside of Attachmate recently but now I'd like to get more directly and personally involved as a contributor to the openSUSE project. It's a great distribution and a great project. Let me know what I can do to jump in and help! Best regards, MM

Hi Michael, Welcome aboard! And what a delight to have a representative from Attachmate on the team. Your combination of technical ability and marketing expertise will definitely be a great asset. Have you worked with any open source projects in the past? I'm currently involved in the Art and Marketing teams. I'm keen to help work on a cohesive aesthetic for our next release, so that we keep nice consistent branding with a look (and plenty of materials!) that reflect our brand. We had some help for SCALE from Karl Cheney from the Novell office - I'm not sure if he was interested in becoming more involved (perhaps you could give him a nudge?) This is a great time to get involved, as I'm sure there will be a lot of strategizing once 11.4 is off and sailing under her own steam. Now I'm tempted to say something about feeling free to grab the wheel... or an oar... so I'll quit before the metaphor makes us seasick.... :) cheers, Helen On Tue, Mar 8, 2011 at 11:08 AM, Michael Miller <Michael.Miller@attachmate.com> wrote:

Michael!
Great to see you found your way to the batcave! :-) Chuck and Helen have given some good advice and they're both great on the team. I have a couple of suggestions that would go well and probably wouldn't be too time consuming at first: We've become all about the noise lately. And our noise has been pretty good lately, if I do say so myself. All noise is good, some would say. And I think you/Attachmate can definitely play a role in helping to make more noise. 1. A while ago we talked about doing an article about the fact that you have been using openSUSE for several months and loving it. If you could, how about writing an article that can be posted on news.oopensuse.org that talks about your experience. Doesn't have to be all rosy. It can reflective of how you learned to use it and adopted it and how you use it. 2. Linux Fest NorthWest is coming to your neighborhood! James Mason is doing the planning on that and the two of us have discussed some of the booth planning for that event at the end of April. We've already talked about Attachmate joining us at the booth and making a really good splash. (Note: We did a high-pitched splash at SCALE and it really paid off.) I'm going to leave it to James to reach out to you on ideas and planning, but let's give him a chance to recuperate after 11.4. Poor dude has been working day and night with the release coming up. :-) Both suggestions, I think, will mark a significant signal to the world that Attachmate recognizes and embraces openSUSE, which will be an important signal considering how we've seen other projects get negatively affected by a corporate merger of its sponsor. Oh, and for the immediate time-being, tweet facebook shout from your rooftop when 11.4 is released on Thursday! :-) Bryen -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org
Hi Helen, Thanks for the warm welcome! I've been a user of open source for years but have not been involved as a contributor. I'm very interested learning more about it all the 11.4 release is indeed a perfect opportunity to dive in. I will be very interested in finding some events to attend and help with. I missed the SCaLE event last month due to travel but heard that Jos did a great presentation there. Also, you might not believe this but I've actually used your drawing guides on about.com! I've been trying to self-learn drawing for the last 3 years or so and came across the content on about.com about 2 years ago. Would love to see some of your work - do you post any artwork on Flickr? You can look me up there as MMDrawings (but only if you promise not to laugh too much!). It was HUGE. It was my first conference so I was amazed - met so many interesting people. One of my favorite parts was meeting many enthused users and people with such a rich variety of backgrounds. It's given me some good context for future writing.

Oh cool! That's brilliant. I have a handful of pieces on Flickr, not much, so I should have a scanning session. Your work is progressing really well. I'd be happy to chat with you off list about drawing anytime :) http://www.flickr.com/photos/helensouth/ Zonker, who used to be the community manager and is now with Linux.com, draws too. cheers, Helen -- IRC: helen_au helen.south@opensuse.org helensouth.com -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

Welcome! I am actually thinking about an openSUSE "city" guide since quite a while. Because many people come here and don't know where to look and like you there are already several people that actually want to help, but don't know how.
From my experience using the latest distribution is a great learning experience and you will also find some areas where work needs to be done.
Then follow the news: http://news.opensuse.org/ http://planetsuse.org/global/ and try new things out. Testing new stuff is a big help already! Tweeting and blogging about it and writing howtos is even better. New projects often come without proper documentation. The mailing lists are a good starting point since the major part of the discussion takes place there. http://lists.opensuse.org/ You might be stunned because of the number of mailing lists. That is normal ;) Subscribe to a few and you will get an idea what they really are about. If there is too much traffic or the discussions are about something not so interesting, you can easily unsubscribe. I think every openSUSE user should be subscribed to - opensuse-announce - The name says it ;) - opensuse-project - for learning about new projects, current efforts etc. - opensuse - for seeing how people use it and where they have issues IRC is a good place to discuss ideas and find areas which need support and help. The best channels were already mentioned before. If you think you found something where you might help make a proposal on how to do that and post it to the right mailing list. I would like to put all of this and even more into a wiki page. I think we also should have a list of interesting Twitter and identi.ca accounts. If someone already has a list, speak up :) -- Bye, Stephan Barth Novell Technical Services, Worldwide Support Services Linux SUSE LINUX GmbH, GF: Felix Imendörffer, HRB 21284 (AG Nürnberg) Maxfeldstr. 5, D-90409 Nuremberg -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org
