[opensuse-marketing] openSUSE spin
Hello folks, While attending recent tech events in Mauritius, I carefully listened to the needs of people from various backgrounds when it comes to migrating to Linux. I also paid attention to why some consider other distributions rather than openSUSE. I am thinking of creating an openSUSE spin loaded with the popular applications here on the island. These would include proprietary apps like Skype, Flash Player etc. I am thus wondering if I can do that all while keeping the openSUSE logo. Is it ok to have an unofficial openSUSE spin loaded with proprietary software? Hello Ish, I guess you can try SUSESTUDIO. I'm still waiting for the 13.2 to be included there to create a spin of MATE. Regarding logo, maybe board is the right people to ask. I thought of SUSE Studio but spinning a Live (installable) distribution from a working/tweaked system would be more suitable. Yeah, maybe I'll rather ask about the logo thing with board members. Thank you. Cheers, Ish -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+owner@opensuse.org

No you can't. Have a look at our trademark guidelines: https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Trademark_guidelines Especially section 3.2 Distributing openSUSE With Modifications.

You are free to do whatever you are allowed to do and want :-) I doubt that you are allowed to redistribute any of the proprietary software you've mentioned but that is something that only you can know. Thank you for the link. I will therefore need to remove the branding if I go ahead.

Skype license stipulates the following in Section 4.1: +++++ For the avoidance of doubt, (a) IT administrators working on behalf of a company may download and install the Skype Software onto personal computers or other devices used by personnel of such company; and (b) you are permitted to use the Software at a university or other educational institution, or at work. +++++ I believe other proprietary having such clauses could allow me to preload a software & expressly inform people that by using this "spinned distro" they are agreeing to the terms (giving copy of each software license). Still I will have to check with someone who understand legals stuffs.
