[opensuse-marketing] suggestions for cheap goodies
Hi all, In my previous mail I mentioned stickers, postcards and buttons - in short, simple, cheap goodies. I would actually love some more ideas in that area, I might be able to add those to boxes too ;-) Be a bit specific and include a cost guestimate. And the needed artwork - in short, I'll just order some of the stuff you guys & girls will send me, so that should be easy for me :D for example, a list with a nice graphic for a button (or a series of graphics for buttons) and a size (or sizes) & guestimated price that you found on the web would be something I can work with. Just a "well we could give out lighters with a nice openSUSE graphic" is not terribly helpful unless someone can provide the graphic ;-) Like the other mail - due to me not being around that often, I need someone to mail me the conclusions. Bryen, you stepped up for the other one, you ready to do that for this too? hugs, Jos
I don't know how cheap is cheap, USB thumb drives, preloaded with the Live images, would be an awesome takeaway. There are tons of options out there, but a few shops like usb007.com offer a basic thumb drive w/ screen printing at $4.99/unit . I'm in the process of getting a more firm quote, and a description. - James Mason 'bear454' On Sat, Mar 26, 2011 at 9:16 AM, Jos Poortvliet <jospoortvliet@gmail.com> wrote:

That's still pretty pricey. :-( T-shirts, USB sticks, even geekos and penguins, are all very pricey things and restricts our ability to give out to more people. We have to be judicious in who we give items to. And that's always a difficult decision, as sooo many people want them and you just don't want to say no. :-) If you figure about 40-50% of total attendance giveaway at any event, the costs can spiral very quickly. We should be looking for things in the $1-$2 range. That doesn't really give us many options though, I know. The trick is to find something that people will actually want, rather than cheap junk. Buttons are a nice idea, people can reuse them. Do people actually care about them? (up for discussion I guess.) Removable geeko tattoos are also a cool idea and much cheaper. But they're one-time use items. Good idea? Probably not. It's not going to be that easy to come up with some nice goodies at a cheap price. I have been researching about once or twice a week for the past 2-3 months and still have not found something overwhelming that we just gotta have it at that price! But I'm sure with all our minds put together, we'll come up with something uber-cool and well worth the costs. I'd rather give a $5 to every 5th person than a $1 item to everyone. Plus, some of our market segments are covered for (nearly) free. I plan to have a small space at LFNW for doing penguin & geeko origami. The paper costs ~$5 for 100 pieces, and a single laminated sheet provides the full instructions. Some people don't know the product; a promo DVD is ideal for them, something of slightly higher value may be in order for longer-time users or advocates. Its a great way to reconnect, say "thank you" to the users, and generate buzz :)

I LOVE IT! While the kids come along and insist on playing with the origami, the parents will have no choice but to stand there and chat with us about openSUSE. >:) We should certainly make this a recommendation for everyone to try in their booths. *extremely good idea*. For usb keys, it's always possible to load the distro on a user furnished key. But what could be possible is to add an usb support *to the box*. Selling the box is a very good way to spread openSUSE. Don't forget than people tend to give more valu at thing paid (I know, for free software it's a shame, but I see this every day) jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xgxog7_clip-l-ombre-et-la-lumiere-3-bad-pig... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGgv_ZFtV14 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

this is exactly why I am selling openSUSE, not for the profit because so far I have sold 11 copies of openSUSE 11.4 and I am making about 20 pounds on each box, but I am reinvesting the profits into paid advertising to try to bring in even more advertising.. 81000 hits in March - I think its having an effect. 9000 hits alone on release date I guess I would say I am having an effect and I am moving 3 a week. But yeah putting a USB image in the box is a good idea I guess but again how much does a DVD cost compared to a USB.. Guess DVD is much cheaper to print. -- Kind Regards Stuart Tanner Bolton Linux 24 Vincent Street Bolton BL1 4SA Tel: +44(0)1204 410474 Mob: +44(0)7868 028028 www.bolin.org.uk Distributing openSUSE in the UK Registered Linux User: 529825 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

Yeah, we had something like this at the openSUSE booth at Linuxtag - great. Not only kids but also many adults came (depends on what you do). I had another thought - domed stickers. I know we do a nice system sticker (like the Windows one) but it would be awesome to have something a bit nicer to put on the back of a laptop, etc. Something lasting, but fun. Doing the geeko button ( http://en.opensuse.org/File:Geeko-button-bling.png ) on a 1" sticker looks to be < 40 cents per, on qtys of 1000 ( http://www.stickybusiness.com/domed-decals/v-pricing.html http://www.case-badges.com/domed-case-badges-with-your-logo-or-image-p-180.h... ) I'd like to see something a bit bigger, say 2" round, ( http://www.case-badges.com/domed-case-badges-with-your-logo-or-image-p-180.h... ) but that's not just up to me. - James Mason 'bear454' On Mon, Mar 28, 2011 at 5:23 AM, yancy smith <free.adim.south@gmail.com> wrote:

yes, may be. But pin's are more probably a good thing for ambassadors tyhemselve (we could send then one or two, only for the ambassador himself). I also use dayly the small led light found in a gift openSUSE box two years ago :-)) stickers are the cheaper support, very good to spread *the brand* name. Also the just a bit more thick version for sticking on cell phones (there is one on the archives, my daughter had one on her cell phone many years ago :-) we have to look close on stuff that: * is cheap in large quantities * is expensive when done locally stickers are the more obvious example: it's extremely epensive to make 500 ex of a color sticker (making one on a printer is peretty expensive also and quality is bad), specially the strong (plastified) one, but making it but thousand is much cheaper (as unit cost). that said, I not a graphist and have no image to give :-( jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xgxog7_clip-l-ombre-et-la-lumiere-3-bad-pig... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGgv_ZFtV14 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org
We should be looking for things in the $1-$2 range. That doesn't really give us many options though, I know.
What about little geeckos to pin on your jacket?
Love the pin idea, also the USB stick - but as a purchase item rather than giveaway. We had a lot of fans who'd be keen to purchase this sort of thing for a reasonable price, and one the foundation is a reality, so that we have the capacity to handle funds, sale of merchandise could fund promotions. I'd be happy to part with some cash for some openSUSE goodies and I really look forward to seeing our shop a happening thing. At the moment the only option is random Cafe Press merchandisers. Cool stickers are always great, most people collect them and love them. The Zypper cheatsheets were very popular at the SCALE booth. Something like that with a cross-distribution appeal might be nice (like the poster cheatsheet). People also seem to enjoy humorous things with a software freedom or anti-windows message. What about postcards? They can be used as a mini poster or sent to a friend. For longevity my favorite giveaway to date has been a pad of sticky notes with an author's name on them. They lived on my desk for a couple of months and I still remember her name. Design wise, the awesome barcode design we had on the tshirt might work as a large sticker. how cute is this: http://www.etsy.com/listing/66753225/pascal-the-chameleon-charm cheers, Helen -- IRC: helen_au helen.south@opensuse.org helensouth.com -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

good idea. Some years ago, some company in France spread stickers saying "ne piratez pas les programmes" (don't know how exacltly translate: do not use pirate copies of programs). I sticked this on avery single computer on my high school :-). Of course if nobody did copy for free Microsoft programs, openSUSE would have a better chance (any program is free nowaday if somebody wants it) so why not a sticker "Fight software piracy, use openSUSE!". What about postcards? They can be used as a mini
poster or sent to a friend.
great idea! make them for sale by 100 copies! I buy them - do as many langages as possible! (same card, "happy openSUSE working" text in many langages + logo)

I have recently discovered how computer shops are getting around retail licencesing for windows, they are buying site licences and installing them on customers computers so they are buying site licences for their internet cafe but actually installing them on repaired computers. How are we supposed to compete when companies are using illegal methods to keep costs down. When you show they for example the true cost of Microsoft Windows Ultimate, plus Microsoft Office Small Business and even add in the cost of Adobe Design Suite - their knees buckle - but still they will not even consider stocking linux - if they advertise linux they will loose custom. -- Kind Regards Stuart Tanner Bolton Linux 24 Vincent Street Bolton BL1 4SA Tel: +44(0)1204 410474 Mob: +44(0)7868 028028 www.bolin.org.uk Distributing openSUSE in the UK Registered Linux User: 529825 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

the main microsoft succes is to be a money maker for the retailers/admins when Linux is the cheaper system. Most Microsoft office users never paid it... But the point is most of them make money from Technical Support and System repairs - they don't make money from software sales. They are purchasing site licences for maybe £10 per license as apose to charging customers £100 or more. As you say the best way to say is Firght piracy use openSUSE - but the problem is people expect windows and don't expect to pay so we still have the problem on both counts. How to convince them that selling site licences effectively amounts to piracy? -- Kind Regards Stuart Tanner Bolton Linux 24 Vincent Street Bolton BL1 4SA Tel: +44(0)1204 410474 Mob: +44(0)7868 028028 www.bolin.org.uk Distributing openSUSE in the UK Registered Linux User: 529825 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

That's still pretty pricey. :-(
We might have two different give aways: First a pricier give away for large events as a price, e.g. during a draw or a competition. Obviously we would only send a small number of these only to large events. Second, a cheaper giveaway as you propose.
T-shirts, USB sticks, even geekos and penguins, are all very pricey things and restricts our ability to give out to more people. We have to be judicious in who we give items to. And that's always a difficult decision, as sooo many people want them and you just don't want to say no. :-)
If you figure about 40-50% of total attendance giveaway at any event, the costs can spiral very quickly.
We should be looking for things in the $1-$2 range. That doesn't really give us many options though, I know.
The trick is to find something that people will actually want, rather than cheap junk. Buttons are a nice idea, people can reuse them. Do people actually care about them? (up for discussion I guess.)
Do you mean buttons or stickers? I see high demand for stickers to stick on your computer...
Removable geeko tattoos are also a cool idea and much cheaper.
Yeah, that's why Jos is asking - this needs great ideas from the crowd ;) Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, Program Manager openSUSE, aj@{novell.com,opensuse.org} Twitter: jaegerandi | Identica: jaegerandi SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org
