Hello, i'm a french openSUSE user since 9.3, i read today the news about marketing openSuse and subscribed to this list. Is there any summary of the needs, of the projects ? Just in case : Today i found up two things that'd certainly help a lot making more known Suse : 1- a ) good printed documentation given in the boxes (loks like it used to be bigger than nowadays ) , b ) plus this documentation being translated (my aunt does not have a computer and for sure will never ever speak english ;=) ) 2- know clearly what is done with the money when we buy an openSuse box. If i can be of any help, please tell me. Fabrice -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

Just in case : Today i found up two things that'd certainly help a lot making more known Suse : 1- a ) good printed documentation given in the boxes (loks like it used to be bigger than nowadays ) That's correct we skipped the admin guide some versions ago as it added significant cost ot the production and in 2 of our customer survey on the question, what's important regarding our product Manuals always were rates least important. , b ) plus this documentation being translated (my aunt does not have a computer and for sure will never ever speak english ;=) ) That's a chicken egg issue. We once sold retail boxes in countries like Spain, France and Italy with translated box, manuals etc. But the sales volume was very low. Translation of manuals is an expensive effort. On manual side I'd like to see our manuals available in book stores with a DVD insert (but no installation support). If possible in local languages - but as explaind above that is challenging. 2- know clearly what is done with the money when we buy an openSuse box. This or similar might come in the future. Currently the income through retail box goes into Novell's pocket and they support the openSUSE project. What I can tell from today the income through retail box is way less than what's Novell is giving to the project.

Hello, and thanks for the informations. I'm glad to learn that translation efforts were done in the past which helps understand why it's hard to have new ones. Is the goal to sell more ? Immediately ? I was thinking that 1st of all making known the distribution more (with a completely translated manual) could be a tool which might bring selling more at the end, but not for sure of course. And yes we all know it might be pretty complicated to raise up a good and involved translation team. It needs a team of available, willing and skilled people ... But is this feasable ? Or is it not worth it ? I mean the community might be able to supply for plenty of skillful people.
2- know clearly what is done with the money when we buy an openSuse box.

Oftentimes people will not buy if they do not know where the money goes , so this is important and Good to know :-)

Selling is not openSUSE project's main goal but "to promote the use of Linux everywhere". That's why free downloads, magazine (hopefully not only strictly Linux related ones :-) cover mounts and our Promo DVDs for events/LUGs exist. Perhaps the community should reconsider it's concept of "selling" openSUSE. If we want more people to use openSUSE, we have to sell the experience of using the product. The concept and values of Linux or open source software, to most people, would be ancillary to the experience of using openSUSE. I'm a sales manager and commercial BDO during the day, so my perspective may not jibe with the rest of the openSUSE community. However, I'm so impressed with openSUSE that I think we have an opportunity to delight enthusiasts everywhere by introducing them to this distro. (Certain challenges, such as media playback, preclude openSUSE from being a true consumer product.) So, I'm trying to raise the profile of openSUSE in my community by directly selling ("smile and dial" or "meet and greet") the openSUSE experience to enthusiasts and I.T. professionals. I'm really not advocating for Linux, since I've used other distros that have yielded a less satisfactory experience. I'm new to the list, so I appreciate any comments or suggestions and apologize in advance for any violations of the community's protocols or rules.
