What do you do when starting firefox for the first time after a fresh installation of openSUSE 11.0? I for myself change the homepage to something else (google). I think that the default startpage http://www.opensuse.org isn't very useful for the average user in everyday's use. I thought about implementing something like http://start.ubuntu.com/8.04 for openSUSE 11.1 - on the one hand this page offers the ability to search the web - IMO the most commonly used homepages (google, yahoo or whatever) nowadays, on the other hand it's a great way to promote openSUSE especially to new users not that familiar with the openSUSE services.
The first thing I do is to change it to iGoogle as well. We could definitely use a more useful start page with search and more resources.
Yeah, so let's get started in collecting specific ideas :) The RSS feed you came up with is a great one IMO. What do you think about my "promoting at lizards.o.o-idea" once it's done?
Ok, we have that greeter at the first boot, but I think most users will instantly click close and that's it :)
There's been discussion of getting rid of the greeter, and I think the idea to use the start page to replace the greeter might be a good one.
I've opened a bug here to track this:
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=405773
Note that I'm not against people changing the start page -- a lot of new users will probably have a start page that they like using already (I'd keep using iGoogle because I have it personalized with stuff I use frequently... but we can make it a more useful default for users who don't have a preference.
That's what I was thinking about. At least to users without a preference we should provide something useful. And for everybody else (especially n00bs) it's at least an eyecatcher before they decide to change it to something else. Kinda.. ah, I could get help here, I could contribute to openSUSE that way and stuff like that :) I got so many n00b questions in the forums lately - I was just curious that so many n00bs aren't familiar with the very basic services openSUSE has to offer (the OBS for example).
Thanks for bringing this up, Rupert. :-)
Thanks for opening the bug. Should we discuss there or here or on both channels? I could maybe come in touch with Robert to ask him if he could allocate some ressources once we have a raw concept. Best Rupert
