Settings for german system with partly simplified chinese use
Hi I have problems setting up my sytem. Normally I want to have german language, but since I'm living in China at the moment I also want to display simplified chinese texts properly and use sometimes chinese Inputmethods. I tried to set the variable RC_LANG="de_DE.UTF-8" and RC_LC_CTYPE="zh_CN.UTF8" with this setting the chinese is displayed properly with simplified characters. But I have some problems with that: 1) Some applications e.g. java apps are now with chinese dialogs 2) many kde applications like konsole or konqueror will crash if they are automatically restarted after login with the following error: #7 0x40d97774 in XSetICValues () from /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6 #8 0x43f489b7 in QXIMInputContext::setXFontSet () from /usr/lib/qt3/plugins/inputmethods/libqxim.so #9 0x43f48ad1 in QXIMInputContext::setMicroFocus () from /usr/lib/qt3/plugins/inputmethods/libqxim.so #10 0x41a9c1f3 in QMultiInputContext::setMicroFocus () from /usr/lib/qt3/plugins/inputmethods/libqimsw-multi.so #11 0x407ea3c2 in QWidget::setMicroFocusHint () from /usr/lib/qt3/lib/libqt-mt.so.3 #12 0x4094c969 in QLineEditPrivate::updateMicroFocusHint () from /usr/lib/qt3/lib/libqt-mt.so.3 #13 0x4094fb74 in QLineEdit::focusInEvent () from /usr/lib/qt3/lib/libqt-mt.so.3 #14 0x41259865 in KLineEdit::focusInEvent () from /opt/kde3/lib/libkdeui.so.4 #15 0x408b46b9 in QWidget::event () from /usr/lib/qt3/lib/libqt-mt.so.3 #16 0x4095138a in QLineEdit::event () from /usr/lib/qt3/lib/libqt-mt.so.3 #17 0x4417293c in QPtrStackDOM::NodeImpl::operator= () from /opt/kde3/lib/libkhtml.so.4 What can I do, so that everything is working properly? Did you install all the appropriate SCIM packages? All you seem to me to need is the desired chinese characters and the Chinese SCIM packages. Which system do you use? On the SuSE 9.3 I use, all needed SCIM-stuff is there and can be installed with the YaST software installer, simply entering "SCIM" in the search field. I think it works great, you can enter Chinese in any text field. regards Herman

HI that when I don't set the RC_LC_CTYPE="zh_CN.UTF8" variable not all simplified chinese characters are shown. I think the system use a traditional chinese font. If I set the variable I have the problems described in the last email! Bye Flo -- If all the world's economists were laid end to end, we wouldn't reach a conclusion. -- William Baumol
Hi, It's true that SUSE won't choose the right Chinese font unless zh_CN.UTF-8 locale is used. There are two methods to fix this issue: 1. use zh_CN.UTF-8 locale, 2. remove all other CJK fonts except the Founder Simplified Chinese fonts (ttf-founder-simplified). If this is really your setting, try correcting the misspelled UTF-8. You forgot the "-". If this is not the reason, the following might help: instead of the variable RC_LC_CTYPE= ..., add a line "export LC_CTYPE = zh_CN.UTF-8" in the file ./profile. You can also make the setting for German there.

Run scim (and if needed be skim) and use with any (UTF-8) locale:; make sure you export (e.g. via $HOME/.xim) XMODIFIERS="@im=SCIM" export QT_IM_MODULE=scim export GTK_IM_MODULE=scim
