Font problems in KDE 3.2.1 ========================== In my opinion with a standard SuSE 9.1 installation the fonts don't look as nice as they did in KDE 3.1.1 (SuSE 9.0). With most monospace fonts smaller than 12 the German Umlauts look very bad. Eg. only the left dot of the umlaut in ö is displayed. I downloaded freetype 2.1.8 and installed it. I could not see a difference. Then I switched on the bytecode-interpreter. The problem with the German umlauts was gone. But the fonts in general looked even worse. Font problems in OpenOffice.org =============================== Most of the fonts don't look as nice as in SuSE 9.0 Same with the UI. Support for Thai characters was totally broken. Depending on the font, size and style, the rendering was OK, only readable or unreadable. Especially texts in bold was unreadable. Upgrading to freetype 2.1.8 didn't help here either. But after switching on the bytecode-interpreter, the problems with Thai text had gone. But the fonts in general still did not look as good as in SuSE 9.0. I removed OpenOffice_org-1.1.1 and installed OpenOffice from the SuSE 9.0 DVD. Everything looked good and Thai was rendered perfectly. Solution ======== Then I found the updates from Mike Fabian on ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/mfabian/9.1/i586/ I installed the updated packages for freetype2 (and all other updates relevant for my installation). After restarting X the fonts in KDE looked almost as good as in SuSE 9.0. Though I still think, the fonts looked smoother in SuSE 9.0. It also solved the font problem I had in OpenOffice_org-1.1.1. I could upgrade to the OpenOffice.org version in SuSE 9.1. Problems not solved =================== The Thai character sequence "consonant, mai-tho, sara-am" is still rendered incorrectly in KDE (and KMail). Eg: น้ำ In KMail thai text is renderd incorrect in the "message body" but correct in the "composer" (with the same font and size). Eg: มีเตอร์
