Cgoban works for me *if* I create the following symbolic link
cd /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts ln -s truetype TrueType
Only then I can see in the strace that cgoban opens the sazanami fonts.
No, the behaviour is not the same as under WinXP: If you open the room "Japanese Room" then I just see squares (under WinXP I can see the japanese behind).
Works for me if I create the above link (or specify he truetype directory in the font.properties.ja file). Looks like this: http://www.suse.de/~mfabian/m17n/cgoban.png Stephen Holmes mentioned that you need a /usr/lib/jvm/java/jre/lib/font.properties.ja file. But such a file already exists in SuSE 9.2 and its contents look not too bad. Here is another font.properties.ja file you might try: http://www.suse.de/~mfabian/m17n/font.properties.ja It contains the line appendedfontpath=/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype which is equivalent to creating the above mentioned symbolic link. Without that line, Java looks only in a directory called "TrueType", therefore the symlink helps, with that line Java looks only in the directory "truetype". I still don't understand this font.properties.ja file well though. Apart from the line for the extra font path, most other stuff in that file seems to have no effect. Without that font path line or without that symbolic link I cannot make it work it at all on my SuSE 9.2-i386 system, no matter how I edit fonts.properties.ja. And, what's worse, I even have another machine where nothing helps, just as in your case. If anybody here knows the details of Java font configuration, please have a look at the http://www.suse.de/~mfabian/m17n/font.properties.ja file and tell me how it is possible that it works just fine on some machines whereas it doesn't work at all on others. -- Mike FABIAN <mfabian@suse.de> http://www.suse.de/~mfabian 睡眠不足はいい仕事の敵だ。

I see but I am wondering why not at my installation

this directory doesn't exist. The name is instead ls /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.4.2-sun-1.4.2.05/jre/lib/font.properties.ja

I did as requested: no japanes fonts is the result. -- -------------------------------------------------------- Mit freundlichen Grüßen / Best regards Ulrich Groh http://www.nofost.de --------------------------------------------------------
