Hello, I am running SuSE 8.2 on my Thinkpad X30 and need Japanese support for my German environment. Therefore I have switched over to UTF-8. Now, the German version of OO 1.0.2 (from the SuSE DVD) seems not able to get along with this settings: In all menues and dialogue windows the German "Umlaute" and the sharp "s" are missing. (I have also StarOffice 6 installed, but there it is no problem.) What can I do? Greetings from Osaka Matthias Seeger

I tried to reproduce that but it worked fine for me. But the list of fonts you have installed is probably not identical to the fonts I have installed. I guess that in your case a font happens to be used for the user interface of OpenOffice which doesn't have German umlauts.
What can I do?
I think it is likely that you can fix this problem by choosing a suitable font for the user interface of OpenOffice. Unfortunately it is not really obvious how to change the font for the user interface of OpenOffice. I explained it before on this mailing list, see http://lists.suse.com/archive/m17n/2002-Aug/0015.html This explanation was for SuSE Linux 8.0. For SuSE Linux 8.2 the procedure is still almost the same. The only difference is that you have to setup a replacement for the font "Helvetica" now instead for "Andale Sans UI". I.e. you do the following:
From the OpenOffice menu select
English: Tools -> Options -> OpenOffice.org -> Font Replacement German: Extras -> Optionen > OpenOffice.org -> Schriftersetzung Check the check-box "Apply replacement table" ("Ersetzungstabelle anwenden" in German), and write "Helvetica" into the list-box entry field below or select it from the list. Select your favorite font for the user interface in the list box to the right, labeled "Replace with" ("Ersetzen durch" in German). Apply your changes. I heard that the selection of the font to be used for the user interface of OpenOffice has become easier/more obvious in newer versions of OpenOffice (which will be included in the next version of SuSE Linux). -- Mike Fabian <mfabian@suse.de> http://www.suse.de/~mfabian 睡眠不足はいい仕事の敵だ。
