Because of GTK_IM_MODULE=scim GTK (on SuSE >= 9.0) and QT (on SuSE >= 9.2) support scim directly via a plugin and don't use XIM. This new input method support does not depend on the language anymore, it works in all UTF-8 locales.
How does one stop this happening?
You can choose a different input method, e.g. GTK_IM_MODULE=cedilla mozilla
scim 0.99.2 thunderbird 1.0 firefox 1.0 SuSE 9.0
