ebview: ("Electronic Book Viewer"): update for SuSE Linux 9.0.
Ebview ("Electronic Book Viewer") is a program to read CD-ROM dictionaries in EPWING format. See also http://ebview.sourceforge.net/ Packages with updates to the latest version for SuSE Linux 9.0 are here: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/mfabian/9.0/i586/ebview-0.3.5-0.i586.rpm ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/mfabian/9.0/src/ebview-0.3.5-0.src.rpm -- Mike FABIAN <mfabian@suse.de> http://www.suse.de/~mfabian 睡眠不足はいい仕事の敵だ。
Dear Mike thank you very much for the link. I put great hopes into this program. Two problems appear for me: 1.During installation I get the message that the library "libeb.so.6" would be missing on the system. Where could I get this library? 2.How will I be able to get my databases down from the electronic book to use them on the deskop? Is it after all possible without special hardware? Any helping answer would be deeply appreciated. Cheers Jakob

From the package eb.rpm on your SuSE 9.0 CDs or from the SuSE 9.0 FTP version:
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/9.0/suse/i586/eb-3.3.4-23.i586.rpm ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/9.0/suse/i586/ebdev-3.3.4-23.i586.rpm

The electronic book CDs are "normal" CDs. They may be a bit smaller to fit into the standalone electronic book-reader devices, but you can put them into your CD-ROM drive and mount them just like any other CD. Then you can copy the contents to some directory on your harddisk if you like. The only free dictionaries in electronic book format I know of are a converted version of Ulrich Apel's German/Japanese dictionary WaDoKUJT, available here as a SuSE rpm: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/mfabian/8.2-i586/wadoku-fpw-1.1-0.i586.rpm ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/mfabian/8.2-src/wadoku-fpw-1.1-0.src.rpm and the English/Japanese "intelligent" dictionary files of the FOKS project which are based on Jim Breen's EDICT (see also http://www.foks.info/index.html), available here as a SuSE rpm: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/mfabian/8.2-i586/foks-fpw-1.1-0.i586.rpm ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/mfabian/8.2-src/foks-fpw-1.1-0.src.rpm It doesn't matter whether these dictionary rpms are built for 8.2 or 9.0. -- Mike FABIAN <mfabian@suse.de> http://www.suse.de/~mfabian 睡眠不足はいい仕事の敵だ。
Dear Mike, thank you very much for the quick and precise answer.
Where could I get this library?
From the package eb.rpm on your SuSE 9.0 CDs or from the SuSE 9.0 FTP version:
it is always nice to find something new in the own old drawer...

Unfortunately "my" electronic book "Dictionary of Science an Technology" is in a floppy-like plastic-cage, which I will probably break, if I try to get it out there. And thats not an option for some reason. Thanks a lot Jakob

My electronic books as well. But the plastic case is easy to open without destroying it. Instructions came with the stand-alone electronic book player and the plastic case is labeled with "open" and an arrow near the corner, where you have to depress a button with a ball-point-pen to open it. -- Mike FABIAN <mfabian@suse.de> http://www.suse.de/~mfabian 睡眠不足はいい仕事の敵だ。
