Hello m17n,
Здравствуйте!
Printing in russian using LPD. When i print from kWord i just get a blank page!!! Will CUPS print in russian?
This has nothing to do with LPD/CUPS.
To be able to print Russian from KWord, just use scalable fonts
which contain Russian characters in KWord. Then Qt3 will embed
these fonts in the PostScript output produced by KWord and you
will be able to print it correctly with any PostScript printing
system, no matter whether it is LPD/CUPS or something else.
For example you can use the Microsoft Webfonts for this purpose.
Execute the script /usr/X11R6/bin/fetchmsttfonts to download and
install the Microsoft Webfonts. Then choose one of these, for example
"Times New Roman [Xft]" in KWord.
You can use any TrueType fonts you like for this, as long as they
contain Russian characters.

Ok understood. Is is possible to use existing ones from M$ Windows 98 SE?
Yes. For use via libXft with Qt3/KDE3 it is enough to just copy them to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype. If you want to use these fonts via the traditional X11 font mechanisms as well, you also need entries in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype/fonts.scale for these fonts. To create these, copy these fonts into some temporary directory and create a fonts.scale.microsoft-fonts with ttmkfdir: cd /temporary-directory-with-microsoft-fonts/ ttmkfdir > fonts.scale.microsoft-fonts cp fonts.scale.microsoft-fonts /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype/ SuSEconfig --module fonts The final call to 'SuSEconfig --module fonts' will merge the contents of all /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype/fonts.scale.<something> files into /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype/fonts.scale.

You already have such a locale on SuSE Linux 8.0: mfabian@gregory:~$ ls -d /usr/lib/locale/ru_* /usr/lib/locale/ru_RU/ /usr/lib/locale/ru_RU.utf8/ /usr/lib/locale/ru_RU.koi8r/ /usr/lib/locale/ru_UA/ mfabian@gregory:~$ LC_ALL=ru_RU.KOI8-R locale charmap KOI8-R mfabian@gregory:~$
Is QT using unicode?
Yes, Qt is using unicode internally. But the encoding of external files
written by KDE programs depends on the locale you are using
when running the programs. I.e. when starting kedit like
LC_ALL=ru_RU.KOI8-R kedit
it will read and write files in KOI8-R encoding, when starting it like
LC_ALL=ru_RU.UTF-8 kedit
it will read and write files in UTF-8 encoding.

And after i set locale I can freely edit russian texts in StarOffice 5.2 bu i can not print it. All i get is GREEK/LATIN/FINISH symbols which are usually in place of russian letters in non-russian code pages.

I don't know whether this is possible with StarOffice 5.2.
But you can upgrade to OpenOffice. It is on the SuSE Linux 8.0 CDs.
When you use Russian TrueType fonts in OpenOffice (or StarOffice 6.0),
they will be embedded into the PostScript output, just like with KWord
in KDE3. Then you can print Russian easily.

Ok. Where is OO located(Number of CD, dir),
SuSE Linux 8.0 German:
CD5/suse/pay4/OpenOffice_de-641c-23.i386.rpm
SuSE Linux 8.0 INT-1 (US):
CD5/suse/pay4/OpenOffice_en-641c-23.i386.rpm
SuSE Linux 8.0 INT-2 (Czechia, Hungary):
CD4/suse/pay4/OpenOffice_en-641c-23.i386.rpm
CD4/suse/pay4/OpenOffice_hu-641c-35.i386.rpm
How to find out yourself:
1) Try to install new software with YaST2.
Use the "search" button in the package selection and enter
"OpenOffice"
2) On CD1 you will find a file ARCHIVES.gz. Unzip it and search in
this file. This is a text file containing a list of all the
files contained in all the rpms on the 7 SuSE Linux CDs.

I don't know yet. I believe it can be made to work for Russian
somehow, but I don't yet know exactly how and have not yet tried.
If you try and find out how to do it, please tell me.
