Appears to work for me when I start emacs, then do "M-x load-library tex-site", then load a .tex file. If I load the .tex file first before loading the tex-site library, apparently the older tex-mode is used. Therefore it probably helps if you add (require 'tex-site) to your ~/.emacs. The default ~/.emacs as distributed with SuSE Linux alread does this, see /etc/skel/.emacs and /etc/skel/.gnu-emacs.
