Hi. Is there an easy way to convert between the iso-8859-* encodings to the UTF-8 ? E.g is there a command line tool that takes as arguments an input file say text in iso-8859-7 (Greek) and outputs the same file converted to UTF-8. If not what is the easiest way to do this? BTW as of SuSE 9.1, has the default encoding changed to UTF-8 ?

yes. I guess you mean you want to convert the *text*. Use "recode" for that. You can also pipe through "iconv". If you want to convert the fileames, use convmv.

I have got a problem whith SuSE 9.1, I guess it's related to the unicode default encoding. Thank you for suggesting me to use recode :) BTW I'm using both kmail and knode for this one, mainly on french-speaking hierarchy fr which is iso8859-15 compliant (they begin to accept unicode for newsgroups related to japanese, chinese, greek and so) I use a randomly generated signature derivated from fortune, and the string now looks like : fortune /home/craverdy/Documents/gnu | recode iso8859-15 It's pretty cool under Konsole or Kmail but it doesn't seem to work under knode where accentuated characters aren't decoded as they should. (it's a mess) Kmail is version 1.6.2 while Knode is version 0.7.7 have you any hint ? TIA -- Discuter tranquillement avec Michel Guillou??? Je n'ai JAMAIS vu quelqu'un de plus *facho* que ce type.
