[opensuse-kernel] Can RTL8139 be supported by any of the latest versions of openSUSE?
Greetings, http://en.opensuse.org/HCL%3aNetwork_%28Wired%29 According to the above link openSUSE 11.3 doesn't support the hardware RTL8139. So, if I install *kernel-3.0* on this version of openSUSE, will that help in getting the `RTL8139` detected? I don't wish to use the old `openSUSE 10.3` for this hardware. What choices do I have to get this hardware working on the latest version of Suse? -- Regards, Anisha Kaul -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+owner@opensuse.org

Where do you see on the SDB that it's explicitly not supported? I only see that teh SDB is out of date... RTL-8139 is a pretty generic and old NIC, and has been supported by the kernel for... something like 10 years. Best bet.. boot up openSUSE 12.1 LiveCD and try it. Odds are it'll just work. Thanks for responding. This hardware wasn't mentioned with 11.3 so I thought perhaps it doesn't work that's why it hasn't been mentioned.

Alright, I'll try it, and then report back. Anisha Kaul -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+owner@opensuse.org

It was wrong. It's still quite misleading. Anything that has a listing for some version older than the one you want to use is virtually certain to be supported still. Even so, I updated a few of the common ones to show explicit support in newer releases: 8139, 8169 & e100. But since it wasn't mentioned, I thought it is better to confirm. I had tried this card on openSUSE 11.3 before posting here but `lspci` hadn't shown anything relevant. BTW, now I realize that it was my BIOS's fault. The hardware (does work on other computers) wasn't being detected by my BIOS itself.

Thanks for your prompt effort.
