kernel 5.10.4: Displays never wake up, though on one system it does... network is also dead
Hi there, this is more like a heads up for everyone. I installed kernel 5.10.4 when it became available in Kernel:stable, so around 12:00 hrs CET at Jan 1st. I have since then had issues with three of my systems which never occured to me so far. The issue is, that there is no display anymore after some time (>= 20 minutes) (i.e. switching to another vtty doesn't work), and the network also doesn't work. Interestingly, one system (a Dell Latitude 5500 with an Intel Core(TM) i5-8365U CPU) still works OK. Common to all systems is the following: - openSUSE Leap 15.2 with all updates - builtin Intel graphics, no external graphics card - builtin Intel network card What's different is the graphics connector: - HDMI on two systems - DisplayPort on one system The Dell laptop - which works OK - is using its builtin display, so no HDMI or DisplayPort. I can only use the usual Ctrl-Alt-Print-... sequences to get them cleanly shut down and reboot. This never happened with any kernel from Kernel:stable up to 5.10.3! I'll be off for two days, but thought this might be interesting for other users/developers here. Cheers. l8er manfred

forgot to mention that I tried both options for kernel-firmware: - 20200107-lp152.2.3.1 (from Leap 15.2 Updates) - 20201218-35.1 (from Kernel:stable) without any difference - which makes me believe that this is a kernel related issue. Cheers. l8er manfred

<snip> Is it possible that the system in question has just gone to sleep/hibernation and fails to wake up (or just to sleep/hibernate) correctly? This could be caused by too small swap or some drivers failing to hibernate/wakeup. Try to manually sleep or hibernate and if the system fails to wake up - disable sleep/hibernate. Try to manually sleep or hibernate and if the system fails to wake up - disable sleep/hibernate.
It's clearly not a sleep/hibernation issue as I never activated/configured any of that. The monitor just goes to sleep via DPMS and never wakes up. BUT, thanks to a workaround/fix from Takashi I'm now back to a working setup; for details see the bugzilla.
