Hi, It seems tumbleweed does not (normally) use a pure upstream kernel, as kernel-default includes patches. Although, is kernel-vanilla pure upstream like it sounds (albeit maybe compiled with custom options)? Thanks

Mostly. On the top of upstream patches.kernel.org/*, it contains few patches to package the kernel properly. All those in patches.rpmify/: https://github.com/openSUSE/kernel-source/tree/stable/ -- js suse labs

Ok. As the provided link is to the stable branch, and there is also a vanilla branch, what is the difference between them? Is there a repo providing the stable kernel?

Don't confuse flavor and branches. vanilla branch is the latest snapshot of the upstream kernel. 6.10-rcX + patches.rpmify ATM. vanilla flavor in the stable branch is the tumbleweed kernel without SUSE patches. I.e. 6.9.6 + patches.rpmify ATM. -- js suse labs

upon actually trying it... zypper install kernel-vanilla ...it seems to install fine, runs dracut as expected, and all looks good in /boot. But rebooting fails - it flashes a console message 'failed to start Load Kernel Modules', then just hangs for awhile, and maybe ends up in emergency mode. Is there something more that needs doing, for the kernel change to work properly?
It's working now. The problem was having the lockdown option configured in grub boot menu. Removed it, and then all was fine. Thanks
