[opensuse-kernel] Backport rtl8187 fixes to v2.6.27
Hi, Any chance we could backport rtl8187 fixes introduced on kernel 2.6.3.0 that fixes weak signal detection and bad performance? I've this device (0bda:8187) and running kernel 2.6.27.25-0.1-default (openSUSE 11.1), signal is at 15/100 and after a few seconds after setting it up speed drops to ~1Mbps and stays there until 'rcnetwork restart' (driver restart?). Which specific patches are you referring to? What git commit ids? thanks, greg k-h -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+help@opensuse.org

I don't have the answer for both questions, but perhaps Helmut could help us here since he seems to know better. From BNC #448017 comment #13 I would say commit eb83bbf57429ab80f49b413e3e44d3b19c3fdc5a is one of the possible patches to backport. Helmut, can you please enlighten us? :-) -- Regards, Carlos Goncalves -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+help@opensuse.org

Digging a bit on linux-2.6.30.y.git I found these two commits: - rtl8187: fix 8187B throughput regression commit 54ac218ae676931813169e0ca074aca2e4adee38 - rtl8187: Improve wireless statistics for RTL8187 commit a7db74f4be3835fd16c6c582d320f692ccccc622 Quoting commit eb83bbf57429ab80f49b413e3e44d3b19c3fdc5a message: "After reports of poor performance, a review of the latest vendor driver (rtl8187_linux_26.1025.0328.2007) for RTL8187L devices was undertaken." So I would say the possible fixes were introduced before that commit (just to help locating it) -- Regards, Carlos Goncalves -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+help@opensuse.org

Well, can you test this kind of thing out on a 2.6.27-based kernel to verify that it does or does not solve the issue? thanks, greg k-h -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+help@opensuse.org

Tried on a running openSUSE 11.2 M4 LiveCD (kernel 2.6.30.2) and had the same issue after a while, but only once for the time spent testing it. As soon as M5 (kernel 2.6.31) gets released I will give it another try. Changed my router's wireless bit rate from 'auto' to 24Mbps and has been running 100% fine so far.
