I saw with 2.6.31.7 and now again with 2.6.31.8 some OOPS during boot. Should I open a bugreport for this? Does this happen for others as well?
I've never seen this. Did you get to the bottom of it yet?

This is strange. I think preempt is supposed to be enabled at this point, but your preempt count is 2, and also you have 0x10000000 bit set in the preempt_count and I don't know where that comes from.
Seems maybe your preempt counter is corrupted or unbalanced somehow? Early bootup code is a real tangle to work out what is going on, but perhaps you could print out preempt_count() from various places to narrow down where it is going wrong?

Did it happen with 11.2-GM kernel? If it's a regression from the older 2.6.31, it'd be easier to find the cause.
If so, the commit below smells, judging from the stacktrace...

Yeah you are probably right. Jeff I think it is a bit dodgy to call random core code like this from the swapper thread... If we haven't called at least do_basic_setup then we haven't got things like workqueues or got all our initcalls called.
do_basic_setup is after smp_init, which is what you need to run the early acpi setup before. So we have a bit of a problem.

Yeah, but that's sort of the point. I guess I didn't do enough testing with the -desktop kernel on this because I didn't run into this while testing the default kernel.
The thing is that this is just noise. It's not random core core, it's focused on sys_{open,read,write,close} and in the rootfs init ramfs file system.
This is where it used to unpack the initramfs anyway but got caught up in usermodehelper expecting infrastructure that didn't exist yet, causing oopses. The patch before this one ensures that there will be no userspace calls until rootfs_initcall.
do_basic_setup is after smp_init, which is what you need to run the early acpi setup before. So we have a bit of a problem.
Yep. That's the crux of it. I agree that we need to find a solution to this, and just ripping it out isn't the answer. Users were actively requesting this patch be included in 11.2 to fix real issues on their systems.
A previous version of this patch did essentially the same thing except it open coded the read/write calls instead. You can see why I think this version is a bit more flexible.

As an aside, I think one potential solution might be to implement a simple_file_write() that sidesteps all of the generic infrastructure surrounding do_sync_write().
I'm exploring that now.

Ok. I've added an initramfs_read and initramfs_write that are really simplified versions of what you'd expect.
It works for me and I don't get any scheduling while atomic BUGs anymore. It's not going to win any prizes for a clean solution, though. ;)

I agree probably not the cleanEST, but alternatives seem like major audits and/or rearranging of init process :)
Thanks, Nick

Yeah, it's in the 11.2 and master branches as: patches.suse/add-initramfs-file_read_write patches.suse/init-move-populate_rootfs-back-to-start_kernel patches.suse/acpi-generic-initramfs-table-override-support

Indeed. Especially given the stubborn resistance from some of the development community. I'm not convinced this will ever make it upstream. The argument against it is that it hides ACPI bugs and reduces the number of bug reports. That's fine except that those bugs are causing our users real problems. Chances are that if someone can regenerate their DSDT they can report a bug as well.

Well but those syscalls will call into almost every part of mm and vfs code, and could in turn be calling into other things.
I'm not saying it is totally impossible, but I don't know if everything would have been verified to work. It would be a big job going through all initcalls etc to ensure we don't call into an uninitialized subsystem.
This is where it used to unpack the initramfs anyway but got caught up in usermodehelper expecting infrastructure that didn't exist yet, causing oopses. The patch before this one ensures that there will be no userspace calls until rootfs_initcall.
Well it used to unpack initramfs I think in the kernel_init thread which is after the scheduler is up properly and do_basic_setup is called.

Why not? It's easy.
1. Copy the kernel tree to a local directory
% mkdir -p /my/kernel % cp -a /usr/src/linux-$VERSION /my/kernel
where $VERSION is the kernel version number, e.g. "2.6.32".
1a. Modify or patch the kernel code
% cd /my/kernel/linux-$VERSION % patch -p1 < some-patch
2. For 2.6.32, run "make localmodconfig"
% make localmodconfig
Simply return ENTER for asked options.
For older versions, you can use my diet-kconfig script available at ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/tiwai/misc/diet-kconfig (Maybe this will also result in less modules even on 2.6.32)
3. Modify $CONFIG_LOCALVERSION in .config file to avoid the name conflict
For example, change like below: CONFIG_LOCALVERSION="-test"
3. Make
% make -j4
4. Install kernel and modules
% sudo su - # make modules_install # cp arch/x86/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-$RELEASE # cp System.map /boot/System.map-$RELEASE # mkinitrd -k vmlinuz-$RELEASE -i initrd-$RELEASE # update-bootloader --add --image /boot/vmlinuz-$RELEASE --initrd /boot/initrd-$RELEASE # update-bootloader --refresh
where $RELEASE is $VERSION-$CONFIG_LOCALVERSION, such as "2.6.32-test".
This step can be simplified by my script ~tiwai/bin/install-kernel:
% sudo su - # ~tiwai/bin/install-kernel
5. Reboot
Takashi
