[opensuse-kernel] Increase Thinkpad fan speed
Hi, I have a Thinkpad T400 where the machine overheats whenever I run openSUSE. The fan speed never increases even though the machine is too hot and shutsdown eventually. I googled and found http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/How_to_control_fan_speed Bu I could not get the thinkpad_acpi.conf file or the /proc/acpi/ibm/fan file. So what is the way to increase the fan speed in openSUSE ? -- Sankar P http://psankar.blogspot.com -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+owner@opensuse.org

Please file a bug report in the kernel. machine overheating because fan not driven properly is a kernel bug and you shouldnt have to do anything in userspace. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+owner@opensuse.org

Already reported https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=810219 But I was looking for a workaround until the bug is fixed. Thanks Sankar

Try loading the thinkpad_acpi driver with fan_control=1. Then under /sys/devices/platform/thinkpad_hwmon you have files pwm1 and pwm1_enable, if you set pwm1_enable to 1 you should be able to control the fan speed manually with pwm1 (values from 0 to 255.) -- Jean Delvare Suse L3 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+owner@opensuse.org

This works wonderful. At last I could keep the laptop in my laps :) Thanks a lot. -- Sankar P http://psankar.blogspot.com -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+owner@opensuse.org
