hi, a question to the SUSE employees on the list: tried to install the latest KOTD form repo but it needs udev >=118 i use SUSE 10.3 and packages aut of .../repositories/Kernel:/HEAD/openSUSE_Factory/ and there is no update to udev 118 for 10.3 till now will there be any or is it only for factory if not then ..../repositories/Kernel:/Vanilla/openSUSE_10.3/ should be corrected cause the dependencies are also udev 118 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+help@opensuse.org

Hmm, I'm not SUSE employed, but answering your question is quite simple: There will be no udev-118 update for 10.3 - simply because too many things would break. Don't expect any ANY distro support by upgrading your kernel. Those who are adventurous enough to play these games are expected to be able to deal with the fallout.. Your best bet is: install new kernels with rpm -ihv (often they require --force also), check, what breaks, and deal with it (probably calling back this list).. Of course, you can also try to rebuild udev-118 yourself. No, there won't be an update to udev due to a kernel update in Factory. Factory is the staging area for the next release, so any packages taken from Factory must have their dependencies met also from Factory.

That's strange. The regular opensuse 10.3 packages don't have that dependency. Jan's the project maintainer, so I've CC'd him. It could be a build service problem, though. -Jeff -- Jeff Mahoney SUSE Labs -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+help@opensuse.org

Well, Kernel:Vanilla shares the spec files with Factory. Therefore the requirement is there too. You can link the udev package from Factory and build it for 10.3 yourself. hi, did you address me with this? Is there a chance that it will work with irgnoring the dependency? Does it really need the functionality of v118 ? If it does need it: any chance to get udev 118 for SUSE 10.3? (or does a simple install of only udev118 from the factory-repo work) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+help@opensuse.org

I am running latest and greatest kernels with udev from 10.3 without any issues. This isn't any sort of oficially stating "this is supported" though, just that it works for me, I don't know what is the exact reason for v118 requirement. -- Jiri Kosina SUSE Labs -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+help@opensuse.org
